Straight Talk About Reloading In Gunfights

interesting opinion piece. One caveat though - back when I was doing the competition, I didn't need to look either - and had no need of "gravity" for reloads as we were using spring loaded reloaders that push the cartridges in the cylinder split second. One hand hold the revolver, dumps the spent shells the other pumps the new ones in, all done quick as a blink. If someone else does/did it differently I wouldn't have cared.

It would be hell reloading while in a gunfight, just setting up the press in all that pressure would be tough.

>The critics urged my friend to reload with the gun up in his face, so he could “watch the bad guys.” Maybe that works for them with their autopistols, but it’s not a good idea with a revolver.<

Trying to create tactics for gunfights is always a problem if generalities are part of the training.

I've never been in a gunfight where I was using a revolver so I'm not real sure what my tactics would be except for another gun as opposed to reloading. I do know I have never looked at my semi auto to reload or reholster during a gunfight. I also have never paid attention to where empty magazines end up when ejecting them. Most of the time (during close range situations) I want a second gun rather than reloading even with semi autos.

Needs change with the circumstances however. All of my real life experience is soft or deep cover against motivated perps. If I had been a local or state uniform, I know I would likely have different thoughts and views on the subject of serious social situations.

Good article. Way too many folks confuse games with reality. In a game you will reload, in reality..probably not. If you can’t solve the issue with the first 1/2 dozen odds are pretty good the next 10 in the magazine aren’t going to matter. Right about now somebody’s gonna chime in with “but what if”. Thugs, even in a group, are basically cowards and don’t want anything like a fair fight. If they encounter somebody who refuses to rollover for them then seeing one or two of their cronies drop will more than likely discourage the others and convince them to find an easier target. I recall a story from a few years ago where an older man and his wife were being pushed by a group of feral punks. Positioning himself in a corner where they couldn’t get behind him or reach his wife, he drew his J frame and faced them. The leader smirked and says “you can’t get all of us with that”. The old man responded “ no, I can’t”, then in a louder voice said “what you boys have to decide is which two or three of you want to die today along with bigmouth here, because he’s going to be first”. Gave pause to the group, and after cussing and threatening they decided to just go away…. “Could” you actually need 15-20 rounds in a SD scenario? I guess anything is possible. Are you likely to need more than 3-4? Doubtful. You have to do what YOU are comfortable with. That 5 shooter in your pocket trumps the big high cap wundernine that’s in the safe at home.. Whatever YOU decide to carry, practice enough to become proficient with it, and continue to keep that level of skill through ongoing practice, and CARRY the durn thing😏
