SWAT Cop’s Perspective: Proper Room Clearing Tactics

For those of us who own a dog, that dog is going first to scan for a threat.

Fido will be off the couch or off the bed, depending on the time of day, to maul whomever is in my house. I’m fortunate I dont have to clear anything. Fido1 and Fido2 will end the threat. I’ll just wait on the police and medical examiner.

There will be no silent entry into my house by intruders. I have two German Shepards who sleep very lightly. Any intruder will have to deal with the dogs first. I will let my wife do the talking on the phone to 911. Unless a county deputy sheriff is patrolling within five miles of my place, LE help is a good 20 minutes out. While the wife is on the phone, I'll be armed and headed to investigate the blood curdling screams. Too be honest, I don't know if I will be able to get my dogs to disengage from attacking the intruder(s). My dogs play fight with each other all the time. But last week while I was outside with them, one of them got a little too rough with the other one, and it turned into a full-blown dog fight. I could not get them to obey my commands to stop or separate. And I couldn't physically stop them. They both came away from that fight very bloody. An hour later, and they were the best of friends again. I'm not so sure I would be able to stop them from mauling intruders once I have them covered with a firearm or when LE finally arrives. There won't be any need to do any room clearing in my house.

Good food for thought in this article. I would like to include that an individual most definitely needs to understand and realize the difference between and how to use each, that being - Concealment and Cover. In the article it stood out to me when describing the fella using the door frame, (Dry wall, Pine studs and trim) as cover. Just my opinion is that would be Concealment since about all modern ammo would penetrate this..I blame Hollywood because they have never seen what a weapon of any caliber does to empty 55-gallon drums.
All in all every law bidden citizen should be prepared for any and all bad scenarios.
Not a bad article and thanks for being allowed to share a bit of my opinion.

I saw no 'cover'in the images imbedded in the article. Only concealment. A 9mm defense round would pass through doors, door jams, dry wall, curtains, and windows.

don't go looking for n intruder unless your family's safety is at risk. not even in your own home. get family out and to neighbors or an established safe place if possible, then let intruder come to you. property is replaceable.

I will try to not be boring or take to long but I will have input that might benefit folks that may have mobility problems. Both my wife and I are disabled but as the ailments and age over took us we sat down and did a of how to defend ourselves. The safe room for my wife is the walk in closet off the master bathroom. The sliding closet door has a wedge to dead lock the door. The bathroom door locks and that means 2 doors to get through. She has here own revolver with a speed loader and a semi auto with three mags. We also have a code word so she knows it's ok to pull the wedge and 911 will be told the password. My place will be in the bedroom and located to cover the bedroom door, sliding glass door and bedroom window. My back is covered by a wall that is the backside of the fire place. Both of us will have a vest and my position has plenty of fire power. We used to have a dog ( Ridge Back and Shepherd) but property management says No pets as she passed in 2017 and we can't replace her. Mobile is a not a option so we have water at both locations and my wife has her mobile concentrator. I have cameras for the outside so I can see what is happening outside. So cops notified and we wait as the local departments know I am retired and I am aquatinted with several of the officers. I guess I talk to much. I did at one time set up a neighborhood watch program when we lived in AZ
