Tarani: The Hesitation Escalation

It's all about situation awareness. If you have that, chances are great that you'll be fine. I drive a nice car, and my office is in a crappy part of another town away from my residence. I'm always aware of a possible car jack attempt, the bump and jack attempt, hazardous situations, or getting cruised by the crack zombies on bikes or on foot. Stay alert, stay alive.

Great article you dont often see articles about this topic. I would add that when the road is blocked by a mob that you can gently push through assuming you have a full size vehicle (a 4x4 will always be better). Do NOT ram them with speed as most modern vehicles have a collision shut off; but just putting the vehicle in drive will cause enough momentum to motivate the crowd to move. Remember you are in fear of your life as the car is surrounded by violent protestors.

I also suggest having mob/riot control gear handy. Amazon sells PEPPER GRENADES (think the pepper spray on your wife's key chain, except that once the tab is pushed it locks the tab open and dumps the contents. So crack your sun roof and toss out the can. Paintball smoke grenades arent especially effective for concealment (at least not on a military level); but they are relatively cheap and add to the confusion of the Pepper Grenade. IWI sells distraction devices (think stun grenades but not on the level of PD grade devices). They are available in single and multiple "BANG" units. Having a gas mask handy isnt a bad Idea either. After all that I'll let you decide if you want a high capacity weapon, think AR/PCC OR something like a Tac 14...

Yes, IWI has a lotta stuff that could be handy in a crowd situation. Still, it's not always easy to avoid crowd/riot situations, but they are typically localized. As the author stated, if you find yourself in an uncommon situation, it's easier to try to get out of trouble early than to deal with the problem when it's too late. Eyes open is good advice. Too many are oblivious to their surroundings.

What you said surprised me: "modern vehicles have a collision shut off". Really! I find all of these "helpful" bits of tech functionality onerous. If you reflect on all the "safety tech" found in cars today, including black boxes, it's easy to see what is who is behind it: the insurance companies. Any tech that can potentially save them money is always a bonus.

This article was a real awakening for me. When I'm out by myself or with my wife I am always aware of my surroundings. Yet I have not been in a vehicle or on my motorcycle. I can promise you that will change. Thank you for the perspective.

There’s an anti carjacking device available in South Afrika (I’ve posted it before and it’s on YouTube) it’s essentially a propane based flamethrower mounted on the underside of the frame at the doors. When activated it shoots out a two foot flame. I REALLY want one but I suspect they aren’t legal in the US. I suppose someone could cobble something together.

OTOH there are portable flamethrowers and even a large propane torch on a wand that could be useful for more than weed control

Steve Tarani knows his stuff and is excellent at teaching it. If you ever have the opportunity to take a class with him, do it. He is known as a knife guy, but he taught some of the best handgun classes I’ve ever had.

Like the article. Best way to not encounter stuff like riots, car jackings and such is just never go into those places. And if you really, really have to, situational awareness is paramount. Stay frosty folks.

Yes dont go there is the best. The problem is social media and cellphones have created flash mobs that you may have no indication are about to occur. Youre on your way to grandma's house and suddenly the ANTI's are just there. So knowing how and being equipped and able to push your way through them seems important.
