Why does it matter to these people that others were capable of response? The arrogance and ignorance that is fostered in our society never ceases to amaze me.

I think a lot of people are driven by fear. Thats all it is. They are afraid of guns, so they are afraid of the people that have them. Apparently, it's contagious.

There are a huge number of people who have never shot a gun, and probably many who have never seen one outside of the movies/TV. They know they kill people and animals, therefore they are dangerous. Politicians (and really their donors) play on this to try to disarm the populace so they can control us better/easier. They just keep hammering away and close their ears to the truth.

People see "they COULD have shot somebody!", freak out, and stop there.

They fail to make the next step - "but they're controlled enough that they didn't, because they understand what it means".

The ones who freak out are the same ones who, if they had a gun in their hand and were scared into using it, would close their eyes and run the mag dry as fast as they could pull the trigger, with no control or regard for where the rounds went, if they hit anyone, or if they hit the RIGHT someone. And that's why they freak out - because they don't understand the process, and the thought, that goes into carrying and firing a weapon.
