The 5.7: Unique, but useful?

Is it another of those “solutions in search of a problem” like many of the other hot calibers that have come-and gone- over the years?

The 5.7x28 created a pronounced wound channel, but remained inside the 14-inch block. When
fired through fabric into a torso, the round created obvious damage

It was designed as a PDW round, operating inside of its design limits it does exactly what it's supposed to do.
The disappointment it generates reminds me of the 30 Carbine argument, but when used as it was designed, it performs beautifully.

Hi,

Thanks for the interesting article. I've been sort of considering thinking about maybe taking a serious look at a 5.7 pistol as a range toy. The hardware can be had for a reasonable price (PSA for one) but feeding it is still spendy. I think that's why I'm holding off. Otherwise I'm liking the idea of the platform. But there are other things higher on my list. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

5.7 ammo is still too expensive for my wallet.
has anyone seen 5.7 in an AR platform? that might be fun.

edit- i just saw a bunch of 5.7 uppers. still may be fun.
Panzer Arms AR-57 upper

I have the original Gen 1 upper on a lower. It's a lot of fun & I consider it a legit CQB self-defense set-up.

Uses 50 rd. P90 mags. I moded an AR mag to catch empty brass that ejects down out the lower mag well.

That was one of the ones i saw. Then i saw the 50 rd mag, which in my socialist utopia state would be a felony.

the cmmg is a WAY BETTER design and runs perfect! i do have the ar57 upper and the only thing i like about it is the ejection goes into the mag on the lower..........the p90 mags are so-so..................i also have a p90 and it's an ok firearm..........also have a s&w in that cartridge along with a fn pistol (never gave me an issue.............now i'm on a replacement for the kriss in 9 and 45 to the cmmg finding it to be a better alternative................cmmg's radial delayed is outstanding and controls recoil better than the kriss does

Nadal Hasan killed 13 people and wounded about 30 others at Ft Hood in 2009 with a pistol of this caliber. It is a deadly round.
True, but still it’s not a terribly powerful round. Basically.22WMR rifle performance in a handgun (slightly better in a carbine-like a .22 Hornet). I’d probably have one if the ammo was priced like 9. For me though the ammo alone makes it a non starter.

Maybe not practice/range 9 ammo, but sales can be under 40 cents per (rarely) and often just over 40 cents per. When I 1st started buying 5.7 ammo it was 25-28 cents per and I bought 5k rounds. Same for 22lr when 3-5 cents per.
