The S&W Heavy Duty Revolver and its 38-44 Cartridge

The .38-44 is a very cool cartridge.

I may have loaded some hard cast Keith-style SWC’s to .38-44 levels once upon a time, just to see if I could. Used +P brass.

Shot them out of a model 28...when they didn’t show signs of excessive pressure, I tried them in a model 64...that was a handfull!

Elmer Keith actually stress tested an early Chief’s Special with HIS .38-44 loads...which were “warm”, to say the least...when it stood up to them, he said it was a good gun, and he was surprised.
