Once as common on rifles as black on Model Ts, walnut is going the way of hickory wheels. Here’s why.

Great article Talyn,
I spent 15 years making bolt action gun stocks for Marlin Firearms and worked with all types of woods, my favorite was walnut.

When I went to work for Mossberg I was hired to make bolt action gun stocks and work with shotgun and lever gun stocks.

And that, THAT is art. I don't care if it's mass-produced. It's art. The natural beauty of the wood grain, the lines. It adds warmth and sexy to what would otherwise be a chunk of metal.
Sometimes you see that curly maple and the tiger striped wood. You just can't fake that with plastic.

Very nice indeed! I have two old Redfield Widefields myself! Both on hunting rifles. 2x7 and a fixed 4. I also have a couple 1.5-5 Leupy's on my two .338 WM's A lot of people put over powered optics on their hunting rifles. Not a good practice in my opinion. Your Mark V is a we'll set up hunting ride if I do say so myself!

Thanks. I’ve replaced it now with a newer Leupold. I have a ‘73 Leupold on the WBY .300 Mag and put a newer on this .270. My old eyes need more than the 1x5 for distance deer considering the round shoots flat to 400yrds

This 1x5 went on to my 6.5 grendel now

Very nice! Sounds like you definitely like those hard hit'n flat shooters! "Bring Enough Gun" 😂 I love it!
