At 72, I've already lived longer than anybody I know of on my Daddy's side.
OTOH, I still having living Aunts and Uncles on my Momma's side that are near 100.
But, I have knocked on Heaven's door twice. Just lucky they didn't let me in.
IDK, I might make it another 20 years or more. Then again, I could drop dead tomorrow.
Every morning I wake up and think, well here we go again. :rolleyes:

I think that it's more a function of "They" aren't dying as young rather than it is of "Us" actually living longer. If you stop and think about it there are now vaccines for some of the diseases that were fatal 40 or 50 years ago. Even Cancer (the word that just drips blood everywhere you see it) has a much, much higher survival rate now compared to nearly zero 50 years ago. I know there are other diseases that are treated regularly these days yet were fatal way back when but I can't think of any.

On the other hand we still have young deaths these days. Consider the death of young Hayden Panettiere. Everything in the world going for her and all it took against her was a cardiac arrest (the description is rather sketchy and I get the impression they wanted to call it "Drug Related" but didn't have enough proof). Throw in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam compared to our recent Iraq and there is a double helping of young men (and some women) that shouldn't have died.

The children's cancer facilities like to advertise that "1 in 5 of children who contact cancer will not survive" while I feel that this is a misnomer and it should read "1 in 5 of the PEOPLE who contact cancer will not survive". Either way, compare that to the nearly 100% fatality rate of , say, the 1950's.

It's difficult to quantify things like that but I feel that in most instances we have managed to overcome a lot of things that used to routinely kill off parts of our civilization (better sanitation, better medicine, etc.) so where do we draw the line? Maybe you are right and people are living much, much longer these days. On the other hand maybe it just SEEMS like they do. I have other things to worry about so I try not to worry about death. I'll beat a lot of you guys to that door since I'm already 75 and I'm retired and lazy now :p All I can say is Enjoy It While You Can 'cause it don't last forever.
 
When you reach 70+, there are times you feel as if you are living at the corner of "Who Cares?" and "Why Bother?" When you are single, and your entire family has preceded you in death, sometimes it feels as if you do not matter. No real social life, and the world no longer cares to look.

Life goes on... until it doesn't.
