Just days earlier, on July 15, crusader forces had captured Jerusalem after a grueling siege. The victory marked the culmination of the First Crusade’s long campaign- and the beginning of a new struggle to defend the territory they had conquered.

On July 22, Godfrey of Bouillon was chosen to lead Jerusalem, taking the title Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre rather than king. His leadership would help shape the newly established crusader state as its forces prepared to defend their hard-won gains.
