I was cruising a gun show and stumbled onto some packs of tracers. They were commercially packed and the brass looked new. My initial thought was they were just repackaged old military stuff; but on second thought they were a 6 pack of 3 red and 3 green which seemed unusual. My understanding was green tracers were almost exclusively Warsaw Pact loads and red NATO (?)
I typically dismiss tracers except for beltfeds, then I remembered the when the West Germans were using the G3, they would load the first two rounds in the mag with tracers (last to be fired) as an indication the mag was almost empty because the G3 doesnt have a last round bolt hold open. No bolt hold open means you find out your empty when the gun goes CLICK on an empty chamber.
That got me thinking about adding a couple tracers to AK mags as well as HKs
