Unintended Range Time

Had a little excitement a little while ago. I had the opportunity to shoot my S&W Governor. Too bad it was just one shot of .410, aimed at the sky. I was outside cleaning up my zero turn mower from mowing the lawn. 3 big, mean looking stray dogs came trotting across my neighbors yard towards me. I started shaking a broom at them, telling them to "git", but they were coming closer. This drew the attention of my dogs in my backyard, on the other side of my 6 and a half foot wire fence. Of course both sides met at the fence, fighting each other through the openings of the wire fence. And not one dog was listening to my commands. I keep the Governor loaded with .410 game loads just for this. In the end, I was the last man standing, pointing a just fired pistol to the sky. And every dog, including my own, running for the hills. I just hate that some people think its ok to let your dogs run free, even out here in the country. This is not the first incidence. I have talked to county officials about this, but since I live out in the country, there is not much I can do. The county animal control officer did tell me I am within my rights to shoot any dog I want that is on my property. I'll hold off on that and keep shooting at the sky. That is until my dogs or family are attacked or hurt by these dogs.

I'm glad everything is ok and healthy, but if you want to have a little fun, get a Taser! We had a training video along with taking the ride that almost made up for getting electrocuted.

It shows the officer approaching the gate and they turned out the pit bull and he grabbed the Taser. Got both barbs in the dog, dog flipped over to it's side, went for the full 8 seconds and then yipped and howling, got to its feet, ran off down the street, and completely out of sight!

I fell in love with Taser's for animals and inmates that day.

I doubt I'd want to carry a taser with me doing yard work. The Governor is my yard gun. But mainly carried in a chest holster for rattle snakes while on my mower. And yes, open carried. I'm out in the country on my own property. The only people that see me open carrying are my dogs and a couple of neighbors. Cue up Karen response here. It was a good thing I had it on me, as those dogs came on fast.

Respectfully, OC is a better option than shooting warning shots. Living in the country or not warning shots are often considered lethal force in most states and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon (or similar wording) in most

Dog attacking in most states is self defense. Firearm is considered proper use of force. Blame the owner/dogs, not the victim

Its been my experience that Pepper Spray doesnt always work on animals... I do like Tasers and Ive seen a dog tased BUT its a one shot thing AND Taser cartridges are expensive

If dogs are coming toward you (ON YOUR PROPERTY) in a threatening manor and not turning away when you yell and wave at them then you have a FREE FIRE mission. Personally I would not have wasted a warning shot.

If you are in fear enough to fire a warning shot, then shoot the F'ers. Either you are in fear OR you're not

I fired the shot to seperate my 2 dogs from the 3 dogs trying to stop the dog fight. It worked. Every dog scattered and ran away. If I needed too, I had plenty of distance from the dogs and could have taken a well aimed shot, but didn't. I don't want to kill a dog unless I have no choice.

I get that however when there is a fence between can be hard to articulate it. Also if your 110% justified then shoot the dog if you must.

However (if feasible) With OC it does far better results with little to no consequences for the person criminally or civilly. Especially through a fence with ykur Sig’s in the other side.

OK that makes sense. Im glad your dogs were acting to defend you

Im a dog lover too but strays are a different thing. Who knows what diseases they may carry
