Took my new Wilson Combat SFX9 3.25 w/Trijicon Type 2 Adjustable LED 6.5 MOA RDS on her maiden range voyage this morning. Yesterday I field stripped, wiped off all oil, and lubed well with Shooter Lube. Reassembled and ready to go. Magazines were preloaded over the weekend, so about 72 hours.
Right off the bat I will say this was the EASIEST tiny bull barrel gun I’ve ever broken down (the part where you align the half moon with frame indicator to remove slide stop lever).
To the range!
First up was the task of zeroing the Trijicon Type 2 Adjustable LED RDS. Used Federal American Eagle 124g FMJ for this task, starting with a zero target.
Out of the box, not so zeroed
. And small gun grip needed some adjusting
. Forgot to mention, I do my RDS zeroing at 7 yds and 2h standing, no bench rest. Made some adjustments, threw on a splatter zero target and tried again.
A little better, couple minor tweaks and a new splatter zero target.
I’m good with that at 7yds with a 3.2” barrel. At this point I’ve fired 100 FMJ rounds flawlessly. That was each magazine once, 4 x 15 rd, 4 x 10 rd. So loaded up 100 more FMJs and prepared for my favorite drill. I did it once, photoed target, then used same target for a second round of FMJ.
3 yards - 5 rounds left shoulder, 5 rounds right shoulder, slow fire
5 yards - 10 rounds center as fast as can aim
7 yards - 10 rounds center as fast as can aim
15 yards - 5 rounds center, slow fire
3 yards - 5 strings of 2 rounds to center, 1 round to head, fast as can aim
Total - 50 rounds
Was pretty happy with both of these with a new gun, new grip to learn, different magazine lengths, etc. Not to mention that with subcompacts I usually only go out to 10 yards instead of 15.
Round 1
Round 2
Finally, I did the drill one more time on a fresh target with my carry ammo. Carry ammo is Federal Premium Tactical LE 124g +P HST. This was after 205 rounds already sent downrange (I burned up 5 rounds of regular 124g HST I had loose at the house while I was zeroing). Also pretty happy with this at the end of a long range session.
Review of SFX9 3.25 w/optic. It’s a Wilson, so as I expected, fit and finish excellent. No external scratches, no external dings, parts all fit properly. When I did the initial field strip in preparation for this range trip, there were a couple of very minor internal wear marks, mainly where recoil spring assembly (I think) bounces around on the frame cross bar (not sure of official name), but that just made it easier to know where to apply lubricant in addition to regular spots.
I could shoot it well with the 10 round flush magazine (it’s a 10 round SFX9 model), but the 10 round with finger extension made it much easier to control recoil and get back on target. I will carry it with the finger extension. The 15 round magazines just made gun seem off balance to me - could still shoot it accurately, but didn’t like the feel. I didn’t measure, but they may have made grip longer than slide. Range use magazines for sure, or a big back up mag if needed.
Over those 255 rounds where were zero malfunctions, zero issues with lock back, zero issues with dragging slide because of tiny gun, etc. As that was 200 rounds FMJ and 55 rounds HST, I’m now will to carry with 124g HST ammo. I’d have to test other ammo to carry it. Probably some Winchester Ranger 147g JHP next time.
I am quite happy with this little gun and now questioning why I didn’t just sell off my EDCX9 instead of getting custom work done and get a second SFX9 so I would have one with optic and one without
.
I’m already looking forward to next week’s range trip! I need to find some stick on drill targets so I can do some other drills…
