"Victory in Japan"

it was once a holiday all across the USA, for the American's to have put an end to the Japanese once and for all.

of course, over the years and decades, many bleeding hearts said it was cruel to celebrate the near wiping out of the Japanese..

well...excuuuse me....

"they did a sneak attack on us, and drew us into that war..."they" KILLED hundreds of innocent men, women, and children......

but it was cruel for us to celebrate our win over them....???

anyway, RI is still the ONLY state that still..."CELEBRATES" our VICTORY of Japan Back in WWII

our veterans and veterans' organizations here, keep "fighting" for this "holiday"


pretty much ONLY state offices are closed, Federal places like banks will be open, and some employers will take the day off.

we need to go back to the way things were, i feel,

too many bleeding hearts changing things for thier own agenda.

anyways......

THANKS TO ALL THE US SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN, STILL LIVING (and dead) THAT FOUGHT IN WWII, IN THAT THEATER
 
I'm betting the public sector unions have a bit to do with keeping it also. ME & MA Patriot's day. Third Monday in April & if your days off are Mon. Tue. or Sun. Mon. Work that day and you get Time and a half for OT, AND time and a half for working a Holiday. 3X hourly wage, Cool Beans.

One of the best-known kisses that day appeared in V-J Day in Times Square, one of the most famous photographs ever published by Life.

It was shot on August 14, 1945, shortly before the announcement by President Truman occurred and when people were beginning to gather in celebration.

Alfred Eisenstaedt went to Times Square to take candid photographs and spotted a sailor who "grabbed something in white. And I stood there, and they kissed. And I snapped four times."

yeah, i think you are right, about the unions as well.

i wasn't even thinking about them.

I think about my dad sitting on a ship in the San Francisco harbor waiting to sail across the Pacific and participate in the invasion of Japan. V-J Day has allowed me to enjoy the freedoms his
generation fought for.

my now late barber, told me that after he finished basic in NJ, (maybe Ft. Dix) he and his buddies had to board a train to CA, as they were headed to Japan.

on the way there, he could not recall exactly where, they got word, the war was over.

i always wondered why they didn't fly over, but that's what they did
 
My Dad was in China, where he’d been for 3 years in the Army Air Force. Uncle Orville was in the Pacific where he’d been since early ‘42. He was on a transport being prepared for the invasion of Japan. He’d already made 5 amphibious landings. His words about when they got the word about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima “we were incredibly happen. At that point nobody in uniform would have minded if we’d sank the whole damn island….we just wanted it over and to be able to return safely home. That bombing was sure a lot better than an invasion.”
