What To Do After You Bought Your First Firearm

I've actually been impressed by how much preparation the new gun owners I know have undertaken. Almost all of them went to a range and tried several types of handguns before making a purchase, and the vast majority of them have taken an LTC course. Many of the people I've spoken with actually took the course with a range rental before buying their own gun. A couple of new owners I know who didn't go ahead and get an LTC, at least approached me to take them to the range, or my family's land, to familiarize themselves with their weapons.

I feel a little guilty because this wasn't the approach I took a few decades ago when I started shooting. In my defense, I don't think too many people did at that time. We had all grown up around guns, so most of my friends were familiar with guns before we were old enough to purchase our own. When I was growing up the Cub Scouts still taught basic gun safety and took you out to shoot 22's.
