I'll jump in here and name something that would work for me, but I discovered it way to late in the product life cycle, after it was already a discontinued item: The SIG P239. I know it's only a single stack, but I'm a 1911 / 45 ACP kind of guy, so single stack doesn't really bother me. I purchased a couple of used P239s after they'd been discontinued. I took them to the range and tried them out. They shot very well and I absolutely love the feel of the grip in my hand, it seems as if it was custom made just for me.
However, I don't carry them because: 1) I put a significant number of practice/training rounds through whatever I carry. If something major breaks on them, I might prove difficult to find replacement parts. and 2) Additional magazines were pure unobtainium (at anything resembling a reasonable cost) for quite some time. I noticed in recent times that SIG is now showing new ones available for purchase again. They're fairly expensive, as most SIG magazines are, but at least available at far less than internet scalper prices.
Now for something that seemed cool but was not: The Khar 9mm pistols. Again, I plead guilty to buying several used ones, but I thought that they'd do for trial purposes. They were absolute jam-o-matics. They seemed very well made, but I could not get them to run to the level where I'd trust my life to them. I tried everything the interwebs mentioned (that seemed reasonable and safe). I ordered new magazines. I really, really wanted them to work. Alas, no joy was had. They've since gone on to the great trade-in pile.
