I had to laugh. At the time of the Lebanon misunderstanding, I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA, as a Technical Illustrator. We were all placed on 24-hour alert. I immediately went in town to Alexandria, VA, and acquired a very much used and abused surplus 1911A1 for $23 at Hunter's Lodge. I wanted some backup to my issue M1 in case (Gawd fabbid) I should get called up. Back at the base, I detail-stripped the pistol, and swapped all the used parts for new ones. Alert was called off, and a subsequent issue of LIFE magazine showed the Marines landing on a beach, which was populated by surprised civilian beach goers. Major fustercluck.
