When U.S. Marines Fought in China: The Boxer Rebellion

YouTube has some interesting videos on the Rebellion, plus the song “55 Days at Peking”…Semper Fi!
 
The Chicoms have a long memory because of that US involvement, plus some US involvement in the 1800's opium trade.

My grandfather was an old China marine… got a battlefield commission in World War I & 3 Silver Stars … after serving in China is a young man. He went back in the late 30s as the commander of the embassy detachment … chesty puller was an officer in his unit … . retired in 1940 is a captain… re joined in 41 after Pearl Harbor and serve the rest of his career … finally promoted to major and then retire retired again.

Excellent and informative article! Recently, I was visiting the Togus National Cemetery in Togus, Maine. Walking along the headstones, I came upon the grave of Pvt. David J. Scannell (1875-1923), USMC, awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the defense of the Peking Legation.
 
Excellent history lesson. One that is presented as just a footnote in school. But it had a substantial impact on shaping the world we live in today.
 
I bought a 1938 version of “History of the USMC” a while back. Wanted more information on the pre-WW2 Corps. Inside was the previous owner’s name. Donald Watkins , Tientsin China 1940. I assume he rotated stateside before Pearl Harbor.
