Whos doing a vegetable garden

Im hoping we can try a subject that wont have us fighting.

When my folks were alive they spent a LOT of time gardening in the back yard. Both were old enough to remember WW2 Victory Gardens. They did mostly Tomatoes, Green Peppers, some kind of really long string beans, and more squash/zucchini then Pattons third Army could eat. I tried to continue it when they passed; but they were more dedicated than I could ever be.

When my kids were young, we planted potatoes in old tyres. The base tyre was filled with dirt and seed potatoes, then another tyre was placed on top and filled with dirt and more seed potatoes, and so on to about 5 feet tall. When the plants in the top tyre were ready, you pulled it off and harvested the potatoes, leaving the ones below to keep growing. That was fun for the kids. Our attempt at corn didnt work so well...

Last year I tried growing Tomatoes in pots, and it worked well enough, so Im giving it another go. Im sure Im making mistakes; I just dont know what I dont know about gardening. I just read today that Im supposed to water in the morning, instead of the evening.

My wife and I live out in the country, and have several acres. It was always my intention to finally start a big garden, but to many problems with knees, shoulders, and a bad back stopped that. But when we lived in the city, I only had a small back yard, with dogs, so it was hard to do a traditional garden. So I red necked

it with 5 gallon buckets and made my own Topsy Turvey's. Tomatoes, strawberry's, and onions. I also had a lemon tree that put out lemons bigger than softballs, by the hundreds.

LOVE it
I considered a raised bed but damn first you gotta get down on the ground to build it higher, so I just went with tall pots

i used to have a garden, not all that big, and right now, it'll take too much time to sift thru all the files for pics that i do have. when i was on the road, it gave the kids something to do, and when i called home, they'd be all happy about how big the tomatoes grew, or the eggplant, or the bell peppers.

as i slowed down, i limited the garden to maybe 2 tomato plants, maybe some green peppers (not Bell), and some herbs for cooking.

but it had become many things too over the years....

1) cost of the plants at the greenhouses......(i had stopped planting from seeds)

2) time to dig up the garden, add the things needed to make the plants grows, and enrich the soil

3) maintaining the garden daily, which included watering, pulling weeds, checking for squirrel damages

4) losing plants due to squirrel damages, an over abundance of rain and for a few years, not enough rain

as i got older, the solace of working in the garden, hearing the bumble bee's buzzing from flower to flower, enjoying the peace and quiet of "the hood" in the early mornings, just waned away.

we simply cannot eat all that my garden once produced, and many times, no one wanted any FRESH veggies.

so we buy annual hanging plants, or we have perennial potted plants

i supposed in a not too distant future, my "new hobby" of target practice, and reloading my own ammo, will wane away as well......

best to enjoy gardening when you can, as you have already read where, many simply just had to give it up for various reasons, but you will learn by your mistakes, and your successes.....

keep a book on what worked, what failed, weather conditions, animal or rodent damages, and the bounty, or lack of it.

I too used to do the garden thing. Got old and tired and it’s just easier to go to the farmer’s market in town😏
exactly...either the wife or i would give garden fresh veggies to a couple of neighbors over the years, but they either moved away, or died.

our kids LOVE garden fresh veggies.

but when you have an over abundance of veggies, you simply cannot eat all of them fast enough.

grand kids "like" veggies, then someday, when they grow up, they will love them.

so you, the grocery stores, or roadside stands for us as well.

Wow thats way beyond me.
should be focus is now on the pecan and peach trees
last year we harvested many baskets of peaches, i dont eat them, so my wife sliced and froze them
then my grandchild sneaks over and eats them like candy
pecans are really good as well, but last year the harvest was way down

we usually have 4 or 5 banana pepper plants
then we freeze them to use in all kinds of food
gave nice kick to stuffed shells and loompia
