I got a Black Bear in Canada; but he was small (300lb) compared to some of the guys Ive heard about around the Carolinas. They say they can reach 1000 lbs! Id love to hunt a Brown Bear out west and a Kodiak is on my "Lust List"

Tell me about your hunt.

Haven't personally taken one (yet) but have relatives and friends I hunt with in Virgina (black bear). I just haven't picked the right stand yet, I guess.

I have been taking one of my large bore revolvers.

I would love to have a rug one day.

Hunting for pigs, alligators and birds has kept me busy.

OK guys what weapons? Are you hunting from a ground or elevated blind? Bait? (what kind?)

When I hunted in NOTHERN Ontario it was with a group. Everyone else had an elevated blind but I was on the ground, in the center of three trees with a burlap wrap. I had one of those bag chairs to sit on. I humped in water and food cuz it was gonna be an all day hunt. I had a Mauser straight pull (poor mans Blazer) in 30-06 loaded hot with 220 gr soft points.

The bait was about 25m away in a 55gal drum swinging from a branch. The "guide" bought day old donuts and filled the drums about halfway. When I finally saw the bear it was late in the afternoon and I was struggling to stay awake but the noise of the bear working to get in the barrel WOKE me up. One shot was all it took. Then it was just a matter of figuring how to get the bear to the truck. For some reason I had packed 10 feet of bright red 1" tubular webbing that I kept to make a hasty Swiss seat for repelling. I rigged a harness around the bear and me and walked out with him on my back. About three steps into I must have moved him just right and the lungs deflated. I almost lost it and my bowels, thinking he wasnt dead. F Me that was a LONG trek.

He did make a nice rug BUT you have to put it where your buddies wont walk on it. Hanging on the wall is the best; but under a glass coffee table works too. The head and paws will be exposed but its less likely to be ruined by clueless buddies who think because its called a rug that they should walk on it

Revolver - most often was my M29-3, 8-3/8" (for sight radius), but I've used other revolvers. No optics on the revolvers.

Elevated shooting house, bait piles, either bulk cheap dog food mixed with bacon grease or donuts and pies with maple syrup added. Distance was +/- 50 feet, as I recall.

Some guys used short-barreled rifles, some lever action 30-30s (very popular), some handguns (44 Mag most popular, some 357s, no 10mms). No black powder stuff. One shotgun that I recall.

5 trips 3 bears, one of which was a DIY hunt. All in the Canadian hunts were only slightly more expensive than the DIY. Between gas and bait and missing a day of work here and there it ate me alive, but there was the satisfaction.

I learned to put a higher value on the rendered lard. I’m pretty well over seed oils, and the bear lard is premium stuff for cooking. My first use was in popcorn as I figured it was pennies invested, never looked back.

Archery once in early 80’s, only saw 1 bear, we were too early that spring. Tikka 300WM once, Marlin 1895 45/70 twice. All of mine were from the ground 15-60yds shots over bait. It’s a nice lower pressure relaxed hunting experience. Mosquitoes will eat you alive, if you’ve not experienced them in the north woods you can’t understand. Deer flies were the bane of my baiting experience making the mosquitoes seem pleasant.

We had black bear every year around the house and on the yard in N ME.
Never had issue. They always fled when the patio sliding door was opened or the dogs barked at them from the deck. Dad always fired a gun in the air if that didnt work.
We didnt want the meat nor the rug, so we juat got them away.
Family always had a gun by our side though

When I was a State Criminal Investigator I found that having a bird feeder in your yard was sufficient to bring in black bear.

You tell people, "Don't do that." or, ""It'll attract more than birds." But do people listen.

I've also seen nacho cheese being good bait. There was a casino kitchen that was leaving their alley access doors open at night. Well, Yogi waltzed right in, picked up his gallon size can of opened cheese and left. Didn't even leave a tip.

Colorado bears are notorious tight wads.
