Just one of many reasons right here:

3 large dogs in our home. They can be pretty fierce sounding. Maybe it’s a deterrent. All I ask of them is some warning, then it’s my turn to defend our castle.
Yeppers! My pooch is afraid of her own shadow, but she'll bark at anything that goes bump in the night..or day. And I think you are spot on about a deterrent, unless it's some meth head or PCP freak out of his mind.

Have five in-door dogs. My Beagle, Maggie Marie, would bark like crazy. Andy Winston, German Sheperd/Golden Retriever cross would get very upset would attack an intruder. The other three would sleep through any noise.
laughing only at the 3 sleepers......reminds me of a video where a thug walks into a home garage and the goldie sits there and watches him ride off with the kids bike......

I want to know how they got into the house.

I've said this before but I think it was the summer before covid there was a string of home invasions in Colorado Springs.

The key similarity in all of them was that the homeowner either opened the door to somebody they didn't know or the home Invader walked right through an unlocked the door.

One of the home invasions happened right across the street from the apartment complex that we used to live in. According to the homeowner they were sitting on their couch at 10:00 at night with the front door wide open when two guys walked in and robbed them and ended up stealing their dog.

I'd like to personally introduce myself to someone breaking into my home.

Back when I was a bit younger, I would leave the door unlocked in case anyone was foolish enough to come in.
Now it would take me 5 minutes to get up, a few to find my glasses and a couple more to remember I was awake.
