Why the 1911 Remains a Top Choice for Gun Owners

All one has to do is look at how someone treats their Lawnmower and that tells you if they are capable of running a 1911!

I like 1911’s and have 3 a SA Operator a Colt Competition and an engraved one my kids got me as a retirement present. I shoot the first 2 a lot and like them.

While Glock and some of even the DA/SA 9’s like Sig 226/229/229 run with little Maintenance the 1911 isn’t quite as feeble as Gen z makes out and when I hear those arguments the biggest one why they don’t carry is capacity!

A Glocknis a great trouble free choose and will run through a 2 day 1,000-1,200 round class with nothing needed where a 1911 you might want to wipe it down and punch the bore etc each night.

However I bet that 1911 will run just fine through those 8-30 rounds or whatever mags you have on your belt if needed ina. Fight!

1911 guys are like the ones that grew up in the muscle and classic car days where we knew how to set a choke and gap spark plugs or hih weren’t driving anywhere. Glocks (and whem I say Glocks any polymer is what I mean) are the fuel injected version of handguns. Gen z has no clue

Glocks are great choices for agencies of folks that have no interest in paying attention to maintemce intervals as they are more forgiving.

But don’t discount the 50 something or older guy that runs one. No mag dumps needed!

The other common thread with muscle car guys is they don’t know how to let go and/or move forward with the times. Absolutely nothing wrong with a 1911 or a muscle car, but that doesn’t mean you have to denigrate anything new or the people that embrace those new things.

PS - it does suck that you need to be an IT guy to work on most new cars these days. Cleaning my gun everytime I run it? No thanks.

Hi,

I actually have two 1911 pistols, Garrison in .45 and Ronin in 9mm, but I'd still like to add one of these to my one-of-each collection.

To me it’s not so much they won’t move on. For me like I said Glocks are great duty guns and they are very forgiving no grip screws to worry about, no need to worry about pulling off the grip safety to clean after your in a rain storm in an exposed duty holster so Polymer strikers are a great duty gun and or general carry gun on the private citizen real.

However that doesn’t mean thwre is anythjng wrong with the 1911 toter it’s up to the driver
I have seen folks run both really well in classes and matches AND I have seen some not so well. From poly guys mag dumping and having a ton or misses or a shotgun pattern to the 1911 guy that can’t figure out he didn’t take the thumb safety off whem thwre is a dead trigger (and the harder he shakes it toward the target it doesn’t help) and both cases it’s after they say how awesome they are with theor chosen platform…so thwre is that sometimes!

I shot mostly 1911’s when I first got into guns, my first Glock I got was in 1996, bought it off a sheriff deputy when I was working there, to be honest, at that time it seemed very odd not to have the thumb safety there and not to flip it off, took me some time to not use muscle memory when I shot the Glock.

I've got 1 XDm and 2 XDM-Elite all 3.8" they are super reliable. They do not carry as flat on the body as a 1911. Honestly I've forgotten I had my 1911 on, after 12-15 hours I KNOW I have the XD's on.

In the article itself, author states:

“ Services. I would venture a guess that more gunsmiths specialize in modifying 1911s than any other model of pistol. “

Hmm… he could very well be right overall, but not in my ‘region’, as far as I can tell.
Most ‘smiths that do pistols - and there ain’t all that many that do pistols here anyway; everybody’s working on ARs - are doing drop-in parts kinda stuff on plastic-fantastics, with the exception of exchanging the sights (on any type pistol). I’d say sights are the limit of their 1911 work.
But I could be wrong…🤔

Oh, one more thing and I’ll shut up** -

Author neglects to mention the adaptability of the 1911 to hand size: you can go to slim grips, or maybe install a shorter trigger…or BOTH!
I’m deeply appreciative of that, being a small guy, and several of my 1911s have both those mods (including my beloved E. Browns)…
Yeah, I realize there are palm swells or whatever they’re called that you can add quickly to a lot of strikers (S&W M&P line comes to mind). But it ain’t the same, for me anyway.

** for 15 minutes, tops

I get the whole 1911 thing. Many are nice, some are great. I do prefer my modern semis though. Either or - just make sure you know your piece inside and out. Still like a strong revolver too btw - a system that is much older than the 1911s.
