IIRC, HD was about to go out of business because they weren't making any effort to out-sell the Japs and their sake rockets, and Ronald Reagan had to bail them out by imposing tariffs on Japanese bike imports...
HD was building an outdated, underpowered model , with poor quality, selling at a premium priceand the Japanese were building a better HD than HD was😏. (Remember the “all Harley drags”, where nothing but Harley’s were allowed ‘cause the Jap bikes with 1/2 the displacement would smoke the HD’s?). With tariff’s they basically kept Japanese V twins to 700 cc, HD (finally) got their act together and began building much higher quality more modern interpretations of their ancient V twins and made a comeback. Going to be interesting to see what the future holds for them. Their customer base is dying off/ageing out of bikes and the younger guys don’t have the affinity for “the brand” that the older guys did. I hope they survive as we need American bikes as an option.

Honda and Toyota ate our lunch too.
Excerpt from Sonny Barger’s book:

“But Hell's Angels started riding Harley-Davidsons mostly because, unlike today, they didn't have much choice. In 1957, it was either ride a Harley or settle for a Triumph or BSA. They'd already stopped building Indians. It's always been important for Hell's Angels to ride American-made machines. In terms of pure workmanship, personally I don't like Harleys. I ride them because I'm in the club, and that's the image, but if I could I would seriously consider a Honda ST1100 or a BMW. We really missed the boat not switching over to the Japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. I'll usually say, "#$%* Harley Davidson. You can buy an ST1100 and the mother#$%*er will do 110 miles per hour right from the factory all day long." The newest "rice rockets" can carry 140 horsepower to the rear wheel, and can easily do 180 miles per hour right out of the box. While it's probably too late to switch over now, it would have been a nice move, because Japanese bikes today are so much cheaper and better built. However, Japanese motorcycles don't have as much personality.“

There is always Indian

I'll just say this about Glock. They gotta CYA because of all the anti-2A ambulance chasers out there, with their lawsuits ready to file the next time there's an active shooter situation like the thing that happened just yesterday in Minneapolis. Never mind that manufacturers have no control over what nutjobs misuse their products for; when was the last time someone sued Chevy because a drunk driver caused a 10-car pileup that killed everyone?

Glock doesn't manufacture 'switches' and make them standard in every gun, street gangs are illegally converting them and Glock has nothing to do with it... It's China making these MCD's and shipping them here and/or smuggling them across the border (maybe not so much now that we're locking it down).

Oh, and about this Minneapolis shooter: Every firearm he misused was purchased legally. There was NO WAY IN HELL this guy could have been prevented from doing what he did. Chances are this guy could have still did what he did even if all guns were illegal like in the UK.

And for the record, for the last several years, nearly all of these active shooter incidents (9/10) are mentally ill lefty rainbow cult members...

Its a CYA move and I can't blame Glock for trying. Because they are so easily converted, many antis are calling for banning all Glock pistols.
The proliferation of the "Glock Switch" is dangerous. Many are showing up here in the Memphis area. You hear about cops catching gangsters with one almost weekly.
They're already illegal under federal law. The problem is that most cites and states don't file or seek Federal gun charges against those people caught with one. They prefer to keep the charges on local and state levels. I believe its because local DAs want credit for the conviction rather than hand it over to the Feds. 🤬
