XM177 — MACV-SOG’s Experimental 5.56mm

I made my own XM177E2 almost 20 years ago, used a 16 inch barrel, cut back slightly then pin/welded a slip over false moderator to bring length back to the same 16.1 inches of XM177E2. The sound moderation effect is not there but the 16 in ballistics are better than the 12.5 inch original.

One of my favorite "loadout" photos from our next door neighbor, Lima Co. Rangers (LRRP). From the collection of friend the late Randy White and his LCoRanger website (sadly gone). Lima and "Dirty Delta" (D/2/17th Cav, 101st Abn.) were Division assets.
I especially like this combination because in those days I also carried the combination on the left with the M203 and we were all rappel qualified (I still make Swiss Seats). From Camp Eagle 70-71.

I have a Colt C-AR SP1 16" and I love the gun. Light and pretty accurate for having a light weight pencil barrel. With a period correct Colt 4X scope or using the peep sights, I can knock down Ram Silhouettes at 400 meters by double tapping, using 55 grain .223 or 5.56 rounds. I consider it one of the best SHTF survival guns you can own. If you can find one for yourself, grab it, you will not be disappointed.

I’m a massive fan of the XM177 / Car-15.
A SHTF gun for me will be able to take down game as well as 2 legged.
5.56 isnt suited for 4 legged in the woods when I need food after I wiped out the attackers 🙂

5.56/223 is much more capable if you get away from the original rifling twist rate(s).
The original, and I mean the REAL original was 1 in 14, and it failed cold weather accuracy testing, so 1 in 12 was adopted. 1 in 12 is great, with 55 grain and lighter ammo. But like 22-250, you're stymied by it.
The A2, and later commercial barrels made life much easier, as 1 in 7, and 1 in 8 fixed (mostly) the bullet weight and performance problems of the 1 in 12.
I wouldn't hesitate to use my A2/A4, and other later barreled rifles and carbines on larger four legged game.
You just need to know your rifle.....

Hog took 11 rounds of 5.56 and 3 to the neck and one head shot grazed off the sloped head. Finally went down.
I need a shtf rifle to take down big hogs, people and deer.
If city, 5.56 is fine, but I’m going for best for the job, not “will get it done”
Any rifle will work, I want to stack the odd in my favor 😉🙂

So at the end of things you're still gonna be hunting hogs. :p

Yep.. great food source and where I will go, there are hundreds .
Ton of deer and hogs. Lots of cattle, goats and sheep. A well for water and a very large garden.
I need to kill attackers and knock down food. In that order. 🙂
