Wow, this is scary, government called up Liberty Safe Company and got the passcode for a safe…..so, anytime they (Government) calls a safe company, said company will give them the passcode for your safe, unless you change the code yourselves

They have to have a search warrant for it…they don’t just get it for the asking. As for the other part—hey, blame the Republican congress & White House that passed the “Patriot Act” 20+ years ago that allows it.

If they have a warrant—they’re gonna get in one way or another. This just keeps your safe in one piece.

Since Liberty Safe is no longer the legal owner the legal owner should be given the right to choose and force the gov't to get a court order that forces Liberty Safe to reveal the code. Yep, they're going to get in it one way or another; however it shouldn't be as easy as a phone call.

And the update at the bottom and statement from Liberty Safe states they only gave the passcode after being given proof of the warrant.

The more disturbing thing is that the safes are built with an “Admin” passcode in the first place.

I’m willing to bet the phone call took longer than an angle grinder & cutoff wheel would.
 
Expectation of privacy. Period?

Sure, you move into a new house, you change the locks. When you buy a new combination lock for the sporting goods cabinet, you create the new numbers. But with the e-device biometric or not, all the data is somewhere whether accessible to you or others, it’s all available one way or another by anyone with a purpose.

Normally it would be anything you buy will have the some security level for privacy or private information. Remember normal?

my take is they had due process, a warrant was created, a judge signed off and liberty verified said warrant and serial number
we need more details on said person that owns the safe. why was law enforcement needing inside? why did they have a warrant to search his house and other property?
there is, i imagine a whole bushel basket of facts we are not privy to at this time
 
Pass key build into every system…then why call it a “safe” ? I guess even the most careful of safe owners or heirs can lose a combination number. We’re seeing this courtesy of having an alternate method to open a safe isn’t ideal. Not sure if this is an industry standard for personal safe unlike perhaps bank vaults and the like.

Side note: Remember back in 2015 when Apple wouldn’t allow fbi access to unlock the iPhone of the murderous terrorists. Eventually courts allowed this sort info divulging but tender Steve Jobs back then called it an attack of civil liberty.

The passcode alleviates the burden of carrying off the safe or using more force than necessary to obtain sought articles. Getting a warrant to execute a search warrant for something than may not even be the subject of the warrant, but when other things located become open view, they become subject to confiscation and amending and adding charges afterwards.

I’d like to read that warrant. Bet it covers every loophole as to the scope of the search.
