Jacksonville Sheriff's Office allows officers to carry something other than Glock

As long as mags match.
A local PD got involved with a barricaded suspect shootout in an apartment.
Responding officers all had different types of handguns. Mags couldnt be swapped when officers ran out of ammo in the shootout.
Officers lost their lives.
The PD went back to all standard issue guns

Due to all of the attachments and such ( mostly Officers and Senior NCO’s) from other units during the Divisions deployment to Iraq in 2004, the Division (Task Force) found itself short of M9 pistols.
I didn’t mind. My M4 was good enough but, when the opportunity came to carry another 9mm I said Yes. I was issued an Sig P226 with 6 mags. I was a Happy Camper 😁

@Warrior9(Ret) I just checked their LE deals and they offer $800 off any HD model and 20% off all other models for active LE. I also checked the average salary for a Jacksonville sheriff and that is $59K (from indeed.com). That is still a large chunk of change.
If the department allows them to work off duty security jobs then that second income to pay for one in no time.

I have no issue with agency’s having an authorized list of options for Officers. If you can’t find one that you shoot well then it’s on you.

But most folks that jumped into Staccato bandwagon have went back to Glock.

That said I find it funny a LOT of folks that bash 1911’s because of “maintenance “ then turn around and justify a 1911 style handgun but double stack and 9mm make it all better!!!!

It’s one of those things that confuses me as well. The 1911 has been around for over a Century. It’s still alive and quite well in its single stack configuration.
Maintaining it is, as with everything else with the 1911, easy once you do it a few times.

we lived there 1983 to 2004
through the dark years of sheriffs office, dragged out of cars via window, beatings, etc.
i was a very vocal critic, in news paper, on tv etc. even got in trouble with the Navy over my voice on corrupt cops. that went over well and they had to back down..when i provided the stats of how bad military was being treated by the corrupt fluckers .

JSO was corrupt as heck.
i had a friend in our truck club that was a deputy (lt) he was a great guy away from work.. as a cop he was a giant turd, and was brutal to everyone, he had some weird switch in his brain to follow the decades long corrupt bull patties.
he despised the new guy as he had to actually patrol and get out to do POLICE work and be on the street vice holding a desk down in the main building.

then Nat Glover came in and cleaned house, put folks back on the street, built community etc
he allowed deputies to carry any pistol they choose as long as it was a caliber in the prescribed version at the the time, which iirc was 10 mm. he put officers names on their patrol cars and let them take them home if they lived in the county
he also walked every beat to meet folks and had the deputy living in your hood, better know who lives there and be a positive not a hinder. and all the ammo used by JSO was paid for via drug busts, as well as new computers in the cars, etc. he also put back in force...though shall be proficient in firearms and hand to hand.
they had a requirement at the time that in pistol quals every qtr...at least 10 out of 50 had to be head shots.. that was later changed , but it did set the tone.

he did community training so we as the normal people attended a 12 week how police are made university ..it was AWESOME
live fire, driving, close quarter take downs, computer images attacking you in real world making your pistol act like it was fired as well as bullets hitting you. my wife and i were invited to partake...it was amazing
he had inmates at the county jail...no work...no sit on butt inside. you had to sit in the yard until the framed out inmates came back
they grew all their own veggies and donated the excess to charity food banks
prisoners trained and maintained the horses and dogs.

he had a mounted patrol, new dogs, 2 helicopters and 2 turbo prop prison transfer planes
then after jags became the newest team, the city leaders ran him off, the office went right back to crap

I wish my former agency had allowed that. We were "authorized" to carry personally owned weapons approved by the armory and on an approved list (no 1911) and qualification. Then the agency started issuing weapons and that practice ended. At least the issued was a choice of Sig P220 or P226 and P230 to CI and lounge lizards.

More bullets may make up for poor skills. Bangers have been proving that for years, 'spray and pray'.

If you look at the majority of any shooting but especially LE shootings as we have a ton of body cam video more bullets don’t make up form poor skill. They just have more misses!!!

Any shootjng if it goes beyond 4-6 rounds seems to become a mag dump and if the perp is even hit it’s in an elbow or ankle

If folks would shoot their Glocks (or brand X) like a revolver instead of going cyclic thinking sub .20 split times are needed they’d hit what they needed to and end it.

And by like a revolver I mean .even 50 splits are more than adequate and within a bad guys reactionary time and allows you to make hits (and 1/2 second splits are LAPD SWAT standards and they are one of the best)

Well placed shots to kill or incapacitate so they no longer pose a threat to you or your team. That’s what we were taught in the Army.
The .45 ACP was designed to do just that🪖🇺🇸
