I too live in the Colorado Rockies. While I also own and sometimes carry a G19-5 it wouldnt be my first choice as a WOODS gun... I'd carry a 10mm G20 but since finding one for sale has here-to-fore eluded me, my carry in the hills here-abouts usually is a .357 S&W 28 4". Works with 110-160gr and snake-shot. We have prairie rattlers and a few diamond-backs in the area and I've encountered both up-close. Same with bears (in our yard among other places nearby) and 1 cat... also a cat that took a keeshond out of our fenced yard! ID'ed it by the tracks left in the snow...
My alternate is a Ruger .44mag Redhawk if I'm really expecting bear/cat issues.
I keep a rifle handy in camp too.. AK, .30-30, FAL, Mauser- depending on mood...

Actually, in a "true" Alone situation the versatility of the .357 Mag revolver is almost unmatched.

Very good range of loads, lighter-weight ammo, and the ability to easily reload spent cases with a Lee Loader and kit bag of primers, powder & various bullets, besides whatever load-out you start with.

I don't feel under-armed in Griz country with a good .357 mag load.

My .02

Anchorite doesn’t say if “leaving civilization” is for a day trip, multiple nights… or a more dire situation such as SHTF or something involving survival.
But anyway, based solely on what I already have or have available to me, and assuming a non-dire visit to the great outdoors:
Everglades - high capacity .22
Appalachian’s - 1911 in .45

Side note: I grew up down south, out in the country. Never lived near the ‘glades; did live 10yrs in the southern Appalachians.

Some good responses. Certainly can do it all east of the Mississippi with a 357. Might be a little lite for those elk in the lower Appalachian, might be just enough. Same for hogs, which is why I picked the 480.

Wasn’t expecting the reaction to the Everglades, hahaha

Everyone has some good reasons for their picks. Thanks.

Hopefully right forum, so here goes:

You’re leaving behind the comforts of civilization and heading into the Bush … let’s say two locations to pick from: a) Appalachian or b) the Everglades

What’s your choice of handgun and why?

For me, I believe I’d take a 480R in a DA revolver to Appalachian and a Glock 22 to the swamps and marine environment like the Everglades.

For me, the 480 provides ample horsepower to deal with anything in the foothills. I also believe a DA to be the better platform for the uncertainty of encounters in the deep woods than a SA. The Glock 22 likewise provides a simple, yet effective platform for what I’m likely going to encounter in the marine environment coupled with ease of maintenance and corrosion resistant.

What say you and why???
Great question and I have talked about going back to the high country where I have been B4. I have been in in the Florida jungle and won't go back again . Another thing I won't have again is a Glock and I won't go into that discussion because many people have had them and it served them well. Being your talking about your choice the Appalachians I would still stick with what is in my final years. My revolver would be a 41mag as I have used them and in my journal the loads I use with my hand loader. But I over compensate because in the mountains I would still have my XD 45. When forced or planed you must look at long term position so I would diffinetly take my AR-7 because rabbits, grouse and clear up to deer can be taken quietly and you can take a lot of ammo because of minimal weight and size and if you look back pouchers and assassins that was the caliber of the majority. Now for something big and possibly mean I would chose a 45-70 lever action because they can do great work out to 200 yards in case it's a 2 legged predator. If you're planning on living out your last days be sure to take several knifes and a whetstone. As you can see I already have planned my removal of civilisation form my final days. My son wants me to have a satellite phone to check in once a month and it will give my location ( the ones on hand are scrambled). I have a survival straws which takes up very little room. The only thing I would change is not to be in the Appalachians or Florida 😊

I want to say... a AR-12ga for the bush and a .45/410 revolver for the glades...
Oooops... smoothy didn't write an attention check...
For a bush handgun, i would say a 10mm 1911...

And i would be kidnapped and left at one of the 2 with a handgun to do this, both are too long of a stumble to get to... and kidnappers please take me to the glades... high altitude and cold are torture to this body..... lol...
