You are better off with a light on a handgun or at most shotgun in most home defense scenarios. The last thing I want to do is launch a green tip through the walls of my house, out into the neighbor's and beyond. Now, if I lived in a rural area and my closest neighbor was miles away, then we will talk. Even if you were loading with some open tips the chances of them blowing through my perimeter into the next door is too great to risk.

Why do people think the ONLY OPTION for an AR set up for defense is a FMJ penetrator?
Run a thin jacketed varmint round like a Nosler or a V-Max.
They’ll go through a lot fewer walls than a 9mm.

I can also tell you that a green tip will A) not penetrate hard armor and B) will break into pieces when shot through wood and drywall . In most cases from the testing I have been present for two stud walls with a little distance between them the M855 more often than not will not penetrate the second stud wall. At least not in one piece. Unless you miss wood altogether and contact is made only with the drywall.
At any rate M855 is not optimal for a home defense round.

I have an SLX-1 etched reticle on mine. I like the look of that Viridian Laser. I like their red dots a lot. Do you run a light on yours?

Not at the moment. In my house I actually have no use for a light. There is low level lighting at all times. I may put an Inforce on it at some point, but I'm actually holding off any changes to it since I may put a different upper on it. Then again, I may just build an entirely new pistol. Who the hell knows.
Lasers are pretty much exclusively useful indoors or in low light, but they excel in my opinion on house guns. The HS-1 is a good handstop and the on button ( which is like a pressure switch) is right there if you need it. No futzing around looking for a button.

Tac driver, Huey makes it too easy to hit. I have removed magnifier for now. It was just in the way.
I understand the benefits of an AR (in 5.56) for hd but the thought of setting one off in the house is not real pleasant. The flash and sound would be pretty disorienting not to mention permanent hearing loss for everyone.
Suppressors are a no go in NJ same goes for flash suppressors.

I've been in a building when a 5.56 went off with no ear pro. It wasn't pleasant but it didn't result in any noticeable permanent hearing damage. It's not something you would hope you have to do often. Lots of guys keep ear pro on the night stand, but that doesn't seem feasible to me. A 12 gauge isn't quiet either.

Firing any gun inside your home will be very disruptive in many ways, no great alternative. You are protecting loved ones.
Nothing is out of bounds.
I thought about the ear pro but also thinking about my wife and getting them on her when seconds count. My current set up is an FPC in 9mm, vortex sparc and streamlight flash light.
But if the disruption takes you out of the fight then that is no good.

True dat. Grew up in Texas Hill country shooting AK's, M1 Garands , 357 mags, 12ga shotguns and any other gun we could get our hands on. Never thought about hearing protection until I was introduced to an actual gun range with rules.
Point is, I have never been so disoriented by gunfire that I could not function.
I’ve never shot without it. So i have no idea how i’d be. I hope to never find out.

I got suprised - bum rushed by a few hogs in thick woods.
I rattled off about a dozen rounds super quick.
Dont remember hearing a thing. Just kicked it into gear and let it rip.
