I couldn't read the article without signing up. Sorry, I get enough junk email every day. But on the subject, in 2006 I was nearly killed in an underwater explosion. I suffered a severe concussion/traumatic brain injury, plus other injuries. I was told by a doctor to be careful when shooting. I already have severe tinnitus and hearing loss, so I don't need to make that worse than it is. His concern was shooting indoors, and the concussive force involved with shooting indoors. He recommended that any rifle or shotgun shooting be done strictly outdoors. When I go shooting at the indoor range, I put in ear plugs first and then wear muffs over that. And lane choice. Most of the time I can pick whatever lane I want, as I go shoot during slow hours. I don't use the first or last lanes that are up against walls, as I have found out the hard way about that shooting my .357 mag. I still suffer vertigo issues 19 years after the explosion, and I don't need to do anything to make things worse. So, for me, this whole subject is an important issue.
