ASI have gotten older I have had many joint issues with my spine and hands, I have had to start using a cane a few years ago. The one I had was a drugstore aluminum can that is adjustable. I too have come to the conclusion a cane will be part of my life, especially when my sciatic starts kicking in.
I started looking at self defense canes, not trick canes with knives or guns in them, true self defense wood canes. When I was younger into martial arts I use to practice with cane defense.
I came on to Cane Masters to choose one of their hickory wood canes. I passed on their tricked out canes in favor of a more standard looking cane for legal reasons.
I first bought a dojo can then the Every Day cane. Due to worsening osteoarthritis in my hands this year I lost quite a bit of grip strength in my right hand so I strategically added some para cord wrap.
One thing about a cane is it is always in your hand ready to go, and with the configuration of my canes I can take them anywhere other items are prohibited. The dojo training cane is 7/8” hickory and kind of lightweight, the EveryDay cane is 1” hickory and very substantial. For self defense I stick with the most basic techniques. Carrying the cane and knowing how to use it is a confidence builder as I get older.
