Trooper assaulted, patrol vehicle stolen (Washington state)

Someone - preferably law enforcement trained - explain this for all of us to understand…and take a moment to watch the video! All I can say is, wow!

From the article, “Shortly after a WSP vehicle approaches the scene, the man can be seen casually opening the driver’s side door of the cruiser. The trooper, a female lieutenant, appears to begin stepping out of the vehicle when the man suddenly grabs her, then toss her to the pavement like a sack of potatoes.”

Why in the *#&$ did she open her door and there are no other officers around!?

I’m am not trained as a police officer, but this just seems like the dumbest thing that one could do. She could have been killed.

PLEASE Discuss.

Just a thought ... Since the trooper appeared to put her window up as the guy approached the cruiser my guess is she had the door locked. But when she put the cruiser in Park the doors auto unlocked on her.

But why not use your vehicle to interfere with him?

Why get out? Good lord this seems like a tactical disaster to me, but I am not law enforcement.
Intervene how? She had (until he grabbed her) no justification to ran him. And at slow speeds he can outmaneuver her attempt to block.

This is a perfect example of a 6’ trooper in the same scenerio only he grabs the dude and throws his **** down and cuffs him and he has de escalated it!

If cops would go hands on more things wouldn’t get developed into car jacking, and shootings. Use enough force early in and things get de escalated

Weird feature, never had my car or any of the rentals I've used auto unlock once in park. Like you would always be able to exit the car (least front seat wise) with the doors locked, but doesn't make sense for them to auto unlock for entry when parked. Maybe something they should re-evaluate for a police cruiser if that was the case.

Good point. But why try to engage at such a close distance? Seems to me you want that buffer zone. She could have used her passenger window to roll down and engage …. Almost anything but what she did. Zero sense of tactics on her part. Zero street skills, it would appear.

Yep. This is why this incident should serve as a training point, even for civilians.

Years ago, but probably still going on, there was the accidental “bump” of bumpers and the perp would get out, go up to the window of the car he bumped, and low and behold … the victim was generally exiting the vehicle, or at a minimum rolling their window down and you know what happened next.

My stepson and I watched this video last night. I am retired from public safety, he is a Trooper with Texas DPS. We both agreed, that this troopers situational awareness was not good. She was on this scene, because this guy was acting sketchy, she should have not let him get that close without her controlling the scene. She is lucky to tell her superiors why she handled it that way.

that's what happens in both of our Toyota's.... i can get into the cars settings and disable that, but i tried once and i just got frustrated with the whole damned process.

i might try another time, like when its about 75 degree's outside

My last three Chevy trucks the doors unlock when in park.

Here is a little more video.

Ideally maybe she should have had a second Officer however as in the other thread nobody knows how to or they are afraid to go hamds on.

Obviously his actions are irrational dishing in and out if traffic so approaching the vehicle she could have waited OR went hands in or tased his dumb ***
Wasn’t like she rolled up in a normal pedestrian. They were called because he was doing dumb stuff in an instrestate!

At 0:54 "the allegedly stolen vehicle." Hmmm, he would have ended up in it anyway, is it still theft? :>

My Buick Enclave auto unlock is programmable either way when putting it in Park. Same with the auto lock when putting it in Drive.

If the door is locked you can not open the door from the inside unless you reach up and hit the unlock button 1st.

i school morning 1 of my kids went out to start the vehicle, we went to town (7 miles), dropped them off then i returned.........looked for the FOB and it wasn't to be found, texted and asked if they have it and the reply was yes..............so i can go at least 7 miles and it won't shut off.................so how far is the range before it will.................brand dependent i guess..........................good thing for having more than 1 vehicle!
i wonder if any vehicle with a satellite system, which is nearly all cars now, will carry that FOB signal into infinity.....???

Picture this if you will........
It's Christmas Day, and the pay is excellent when you have enough seniority to get the duty. You've spent the last couple of years behind a desk, but it's Christmas Day, what could possibly go wrong. Saturation patrols looking for intoxicated drivers put you on the Interstate, where you just happen to be the nearest unit to a call of a pedestrian on the freeway......

The officers I do know all say one has to go on the road, go on patrol to get promoted. So there is that issue.

I know some female officers and in my interactions they have been quite professional. Let’s be honest, it’s a male-dominated field.

But please help me to understand the how’s/why she acted the way she did in this contact.

What can we collectively learn from this?
Usually the female officers get out of patrol as soon as they can. Seen it. If good looking, they get an admin job working for some member of the brass…a sure road to promotion! No offense there Belladonna. Some end up liking patrol. When I was a Detective, I worked vetting details with one. She came in handy when dealing with female suspects and was one tough cookie in her own right!

Bwck about 1974, I was in FTO School and on a break, we noticed that the potential female recruits were running the entry level obstacle course. Up to that time there were Policemen and Policewomen. Soon we were all to be Police Officers, although I wore a Policeman badge until the mid-80s, when I became a Detectve., until I later I lateraled to Sergeant. Back to the point…as we watched the women did well in everything until it came to the 6’ wall. Everyone ran at the wall, but couldn’t jump and hit it straight on. I worked with male officers later whom I doubt could have made it any better. Comes with a reduction in standards, I guess.

Likewise the '17 Ram .
Programable to auto unlock . Automatically locks upon reaching a certain speed . I'll have to pay attention , but something like 10 or 15mph .
