If you like Doubles, how'bout a triple?

Drillings are three barrel guns, typically a SxS SHOTGUN with a RIFLE between/below the shotgun barrels. There are Double Rifle Drillings with a single shotgun barrel; but they arent as prevalent. Drillings are really popular in Europe. Its partly because of the overlapping hunting seasons. You may be out bird hunting and come across a stag, making the Drilling the perfect gun to have in the field. Its also because of various firearms laws, limiting the number of guns that can be owned by one person. Its not uncommon to have barrel inserts that drop in the shotgun and rifle barrels to give even more cartridge options

The best of the Drillings (there really arent any others) have a lever that when switching between shotgun and rifle barrels, raises/lowers the iron sights. Many Drillings are built with scope mounts to allow quick on/off optics. There are some really cool guns with built in spare cartridge holders in the buttstock.

Say what you will about Ole Herman Goering; but the man loved hunting. He loved it so much that he ordered a drilling to be issued as a survival rifle for his air crews (12ga x 12ga over 9.3x74R) One of the shotgun barrels was unchoked for slugs and the other choked for bird shot, a true dangerous game set up.

...and if you really want to go extreme there are also Vierlings (four barrel guns).. Ive seen pics of Vierlings but never handled any. Drilling are fairly common in the European gun culture.

Over here the Combo guns (rifle/shotgun), while not common are available. The Savage Model 24 line of guns was the most common.

The USAF M6 survival rifle (22 Hornet/410) has been made for civilians by several manufacturers. The military version had 14" barrels. Civilian versions had/have 18" barrels and were made in 22LR/410, 22mag/410 and 22Hornet/410

Drillings typically only have two triggers (like a double barrel shotgun). What they DO have is a switch typically on the side to flip between shotgun and rifle. Its no more complicated than a double shotgun being able to switch from the R/L or O/U barrel

Exactly. I will say, I expect they might get heavy; especially the FOUR rifle versions. Two shotgun Drillings typically arent especially heavy. Double Rifles can be light or heavy, it depends on the caliber. My 9.3x74R swings like a shotgun and yet it shoots a cartridge that will drop the biggest game. Ive got an old 45-70 Double, I suspect it was made on a shotgun action thats heavier than my 470NE

Great read! Another military arms lesson in or me. Yes, you can say what you will about Germany in general, but their gun manufacturing prowess was phenomenal. BTW, the Vierling rifle/shotgun is something to behold...looks like a crown jewel.
Oh, and Herman might have loved to hunt, but I doubt he walked much. Looked like he ate lard 24/7. :)
