Hellion and Optic and Bipod - Oh My! 24 Feb 26

Lab4Us

Professional
So decided to run the Hellion up to the range and check out my EOTECH HWS XPS2 and SA Bipod. Ammo nothing fancy, 125 rounds of Winchester M193 55g FMJ. Was going to wear the gloves, but after second 5 round grouping, took them off as I preferred actually feeling the trigger.

For those with holographic sight experience, I could use some guidance. I had a really hard time trying to look at target like I do with a pistol RDS. It seemed I almost had to use it like a scope, one eye closed, to get a shot I was comfortable taking (where I thought I might actually hit what I was aiming at). Could this be 1) lack of experience with sight, 2) sight not placed right on rail (too far/too close), or sight not high enough (I have a riser coming in later this week)? Or is there a different way to visualize an HWS vs a RDS? Even at the end of 125 rounds, I still didn’t “feel” like I was using the sight right. Two eyes open, looking at target, caused dot to be very blurred (which seemed magnified since I was trying to use circle/lower hash intersection for dot at 7 yards). I suspect a lot of it is lack of rifle shooting with an HWS, but thought I’d check in.

I initially set up at 15 yards with the intent of using center dot of optic to zero in the rifle. After 3 attempts with adjustments after first 2 and seemingly missing something (I was wagging the adjustments, no math), I decided to move same target to 7 yards and use the bottom hash of the optic 68 MOA circle, which is supposed to equal the center dot at 50/200 yards. I have the XPS 2, not 3, so I don’t have the DCR chevron. I used (tried to) where bottom hash met circle.

These were all with bipod, and the last 5 round group at the lower left “20” was AWESOME!

Since in seemed the 7 yd/hashmark zero was excellent, I left it as is and shot 5 round groups into each little square.

Then 5 rounds each into the other three “20”s, top two and bottom right.

Finished up this target by putting another 10 into the top left red square.

The previous was all with bipod, so I set up a new target at 7 yards, collapsed the bipod and fired the next 60 rounds standing, no support. I am not sure why I pulled consistently left when not using bipod? I do know I was flinching by this point, no matter how hard I tried not to, so maybe that’s it and more trigger time will alleviate it. But it WAS great fun taking out the Hellion!

And after all that great fun, I shot 25 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 32 HR Mag, 80g FTX because it had been a while since I shot actual Magnums out of my SW432.

12 rounds at head, 13 rounds to center, the two head misses were where I got caught cheating trying to prep the trigger for a psuedo single action shot…so I quit doing that :ROFLMAO: !

Quick question.....do you know how to properly load a bipod for shooting purposes?
Bipod legs fold forward, lean firmly but not overly so into shots, assume natural position relative to weapon. Only thing I didn’t do (far as I know) was prone position, I set bipod on counter where you see gun lying in first couple of photos. Was using it mainly as a bench rest to help steady gun during zeroing.

More concerned about using the HWS, but after doing some research this afternoon, I may have it too far forward - though moving it closer to my eyes may be interesting with trifocals and an astigmatism.

I have my optic on the Hellion a touch further back. Couple slots aft of yours. Just me though. I have better sight picture, but I have a 1x4

I dont understand a bipod on a bullpup, but maybe thats just me. I always figured the reduced size of a bullpup would make a bipod awkward. The Brits tried a long barreled bullpup as a SAW and that had a bipod so I suppose it could work AND of course whatever works for you

Precision or target work may make sense without having to bring a bag, rest, etc..

OK this is me so take that for its full worth; but I just never considered a bullpup for anything precision. Yes zero it; but not more than kill shots out to say 500m

AUG LMG with 24" barrel

The French had a bipod on their FAMAS but I never once saw it used. Admittedly my experience was very limited

Personal preference like all rifle set ups.
Not for me, but shooter may find where they like to rest a gun. Not worrying about a bag, rest or other may make it work for their particular needs

EXACTLY when I think I want to zero or shoot for precision, I think sandbags or a rest. When I think short rifle, a bipod never comes to mind
I prefer not to carry sandbags or a giant rest in my range bag. You did notice that was an indoor range with a 15 yard marked max distance? All I had to do was open my rifle case and walla! A steady base to rest my barrel on! Different strokes for different folks and all that…
Very nice shooting sir. I can see poor ole vital dude bout to lose some more arms
:ROFLMAO: No idea what’s up with my range, they’re starting to stock mostly all these “fun” targets and very few tactical targets. Why I used the hostage one for my revolver…would have been vital or tactical dude given the chance.

Guess the “fun” targets draw more gun rental customers?
