Hellion and Optic and Bipod - Oh My! 24 Feb 26

So decided to run the Hellion up to the range and check out my EOTECH HWS XPS2 and SA Bipod. Ammo nothing fancy, 125 rounds of Winchester M193 55g FMJ. Was going to wear the gloves, but after second 5 round grouping, took them off as I preferred actually feeling the trigger.

For those with holographic sight experience, I could use some guidance. I had a really hard time trying to look at target like I do with a pistol RDS. It seemed I almost had to use it like a scope, one eye closed, to get a shot I was comfortable taking (where I thought I might actually hit what I was aiming at). Could this be 1) lack of experience with sight, 2) sight not placed right on rail (too far/too close), or sight not high enough (I have a riser coming in later this week)? Or is there a different way to visualize an HWS vs a RDS? Even at the end of 125 rounds, I still didn’t “feel” like I was using the sight right. Two eyes open, looking at target, caused dot to be very blurred (which seemed magnified since I was trying to use circle/lower hash intersection for dot at 7 yards). I suspect a lot of it is lack of rifle shooting with an HWS, but thought I’d check in.

I initially set up at 15 yards with the intent of using center dot of optic to zero in the rifle. After 3 attempts with adjustments after first 2 and seemingly missing something (I was wagging the adjustments, no math), I decided to move same target to 7 yards and use the bottom hash of the optic 68 MOA circle, which is supposed to equal the center dot at 50/200 yards. I have the XPS 2, not 3, so I don’t have the DCR chevron. I used (tried to) where bottom hash met circle.

These were all with bipod, and the last 5 round group at the lower left “20” was AWESOME!

Since in seemed the 7 yd/hashmark zero was excellent, I left it as is and shot 5 round groups into each little square.

Then 5 rounds each into the other three “20”s, top two and bottom right.

Finished up this target by putting another 10 into the top left red square.

The previous was all with bipod, so I set up a new target at 7 yards, collapsed the bipod and fired the next 60 rounds standing, no support. I am not sure why I pulled consistently left when not using bipod? I do know I was flinching by this point, no matter how hard I tried not to, so maybe that’s it and more trigger time will alleviate it. But it WAS great fun taking out the Hellion!

And after all that great fun, I shot 25 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 32 HR Mag, 80g FTX because it had been a while since I shot actual Magnums out of my SW432.

12 rounds at head, 13 rounds to center, the two head misses were where I got caught cheating trying to prep the trigger for a psuedo single action shot…so I quit doing that :ROFLMAO: !
