Just ordered a Ronin EMP 3-inch

First, and intro... I'm new here, and this will be my first 1911. I live in New Hampshire, and have several handguns, and as I said, this is my first 1911 and my first from Springfield Armory. I generally prefer wheel guns, but it is difficult to carry a 4-inch wheel gun. The closest I have been to a 1911 format was a SIG 938, which, although small, I liked carrying cocked and locked and practiced quite a bit. I plan on using this as a replacement for a SIG 365XL as my primary carry.

I do have a couple of questions...
  • What holster options are there for Outside Waistband?
  • How many extra magazines are recommended? I did order one extra.
  • Any other recommendations?
 
Welcome to the forum and 1911. I have tried more holster types and brands than I can count in 57 years of carrying a concealed firearm. I finally landed on the Blackpoint Tactical Leather Wing OWB holster. I like leather but these kydex holsters are functional, secure, and durable, and the leather wing is comfortable. You can buy direct from them or may be,able to find the model you want on Amazon

My second choice would be On Point holsters. Chuck is a veteran and a friend and makes a great holster.

I really like horizontal shoulder holsters for short 1911s. In my mind the Miami Classic the the absolute best. It balances the gun with two mags on the opposite side. Avoid the urge to use tie downs. The gun and mags will balance the rig. Tie towns actually make to gun show more than not using them. When the rig is able to "swing", it will move with your coat and not show something held against you.

As for mags, I always carry two. I you insist on a belt holster consider a paddle for your mags. Its easy to slip your belt holster off at the end of the day; but you need to remove the belt completely to remove the mag pouch--with a paddle style mag carried you can just "pop" the mag holder off
 
Ill add this, I used to carry TWO Detonics Combat Master 1911 (this was in the pre Colt Officer Model days). Two gave me a fast reload and a faster response if there was a malfunction. Back then I used an Alessi rig. Instead of thumb snaps the Alessi used pull through snaps in the triggerguard; you just grabbed the gun and pulled it out of the holster. Sadly the Alessi is no longer available. Now my fallback is the Miami Classic

The Detonics got traded to a buddy who "had to have them". Today Im running a pair of Rock Island Officer size guns in 45acp (of course). Thats 14 rounds and when the mood or need arises I carry a spare double mag pouch with two 8 round mags. Just for fun I have a Milt Sparks SIX PACK. It hold 6 mags (bullets pointing out). I havent come up with a need for it yet; but thats 62 rounds of "GO AWAY" and how cool is that

Welcome to a friendly place from Ghost Ridge. I'll give you my nickels worth no strings attached. I have carried a 1911 since the early 50s prior to that I carried a revolver,45 lc which I still carry once in a while. 1911s love the Pancake holster and the conceal very well as many of us used that for personal carry and when we were assigned court duty and had to wear Sunday go to meetin clothes. The Pancake holster sits nicely under Hawaiian shirt or suit jacket with smooth positive action. I still have my Pancake which was made for me with my preference of cant for draw getting out of my vehicle and did not hinder my needed action. But the proof in the pudding is what you are efficient with. Ok I spent a dime on answering.

Welcome to the forum! I have a couple of full size 1911s from Springfield, great guns. The Sig 365XL is no slouch. ;)

Holsters, oh boy, holsters. Everyone has their favorite makers. For OWB, will you require retention? Level 1? Level 2? Or will it be concealed under a shirt or jacket? For regular kydex carry I like Rounded Gear. But my EDC needs are simple.

For EDC I sometimes carry one extra magazine. For a training class I will carry three extra and rotate them into my main mag holster for quick reloads. For most of my units I have at least five magazines, some have more.

Training and practice is important, especially with new gear. It sounds like you know that, sorry to state the obvious. Thanks for joining us. Stick around, ask more questions. There are a lot of guys here with vast experiences, some of it about guns. ;)
