300 Blackout vs .308 Win: Which Round Reigns Supreme in AR-15s?

It's starting to veer slightly off the original topic of this thread, but I am kinda fond of 308 Winchester in a bolt action with a lightweight. I had, at one time about four of them. One was a Ruger "Scout" rifle, the others were Remington 700s with Remington's standard lightweight barrel. I had a local 'smith cut them back to 18". I now have only one of them (one of the Rem 700s) left now. Too many trades! At any rate, since I handload, I'm also fond of downloading the 308 to just above 30-30 level velocities with 130 grain (I know, not a standard 30-30 bullet weight) and 150 grain bullets. It is a lot of fun to shoot these, and a lot more pleasant recoil and muzzle blast wise. It is effective on game to just a bit longer range than a 30-30 round, and a heck of a lot easier to get hits with. I call it my bolt-action "thutty-thutty".

I'm assuming your gas system lengths are either pistol (in the shorter barrels) up to perhaps a carbine length? I don't have any first hand experience, but I've followed the technical and end-user discussions on the 300 BLK for years. As I understand, the 300 BLK struggles to run correctly with a longer-than-pistol length gas system. And 16" barrels CAN be problematic. It is a cartridge which definitely seems to "like" a shorter barrel to go along with that short gas system. Sorry to be a nag, I'm just curious as to what the 300 BLK experiences have been for members on this forum.
All the .300blk AR barrels that I'm aware of have a pistol length gas system no matter the length. I haven't come across anything else.

What is nice is for individuals that are smaller framed the .300bo..my daughter… the .308 in SbR form is still too heavy and higher recoil. The .300bo offers a nice balance with a little more power over 5.56 in a smaller package SBR for those with smaller stature and needing more power
Yep. We have to keep a steady stream of this addictive gun stuff appropriate for the younger ones. We give 'em their first few boxes of ammo free! Once they're hooked we can move 'em up to the hard core stuff. :p 😕;)

There's a few 14.5" and 16" ones out there that have the carbine length system. However they gotta have a heck-uv-a-large gas port (relative to a 5.56/223 barrel of equal length) to function correctly. That said, for 300 BLK a pistol length gas system is not out of place even on a 16" barrel. (Again, keep in mind that everything I write here is heresay. I have no first hand experience, just a TON of reading, asking questions, etc.)

Ive put together a lot of .300blk pistols and rifles.

Awesome! I've done a lot of 5.56/223s in all sizes and shapes. Sounds like you have quite a bit of hands-on 300 BLK experience.

If you don't mind, could you share your "worst experience ever" in putting together a 300 BLK and having issues getting it to run? I realize that you might not have had such, but everyone I've talked with who has put together more than a few of them has at least one horror story of the frankengunfromhell that would not yield to their ministrations.

Yep

You'd be surprised even though most loads use 296, h110, 4227 and similar powders regardless the bullet weights

I haven't encountered any problems with .300blk builds before. I typically use mid to higher grade parts in my builds also to avoid tolerance issues.

Ill have to check the 16" i have, but I'm fairly sure it's carbine length
I was just reading some stuff online and carbine length gas system barrels can be found and typically work fine for .300blk but can have issues under 16in. The 16in barrels I've used are all pistol length gas systems. These 16in barrels are Wilson, BA, and Faxon and maybe one or two more different brands.
