M1A safety does not engage

Hi, new M1A owner here.

I can not get the safety to engage on my rifle.

I am reluctant to smack it with a hammer and wonder if removing the trigger mechanism will allow me to move the safety back and forth.

Call Springfield up, shouldn’t mess with any guns safety, call them instead of email, there still kinda slow on that.

Also the rifle needs to be cocked to engage the safety. If it is in fired condition it won't go on safe

This and the previous. Is the rifle cocked. Did this start after reassembly following a cleaning. I’ve a Garand and a Mini, son and grandson have M1A’s- never saw an issue with a safety. If the trigger group is seated and action cycled and it won’t work I’d call Springfield

My safety is super stiff .... That being said

Tried it again this morn ing, I just wasn't applying enough force to make it engage.

Works after all.

When Ingot my M1A the safety was extremely stiff, but once I covered it into position it became progressively easier to engage.

I'm new to this beast as well, the safety on a new M1A is harder to engage than you think, it doesn't just 'click' on you gotta put some into it.

It should loosen up after it’s been cycled. My Garand and Mini both are smooth and easy to operate-but they’ve both been used—a lot.
