What are your earliest memories of ole Earl Schieb and his 29.95 paint job.

After gaining massive popularity, the widely advertised "come-on" rate eventually settled at $ 29.95 for coupes and sedans, famously accompanied by the slogan, "I'm Earl Scheib, and I'll paint any car, any color for $ 29.95. These early, rock-bottom prices were introductory. The total out-the-door cost often escalated, as consumers on forums like the AACA Forums point out that extra fees applied for masking, prep work, and higher-tier paint. [1]

i too recall that man's advertising, and i am a bit older than you, that's why $19.99 came to me.

yes, if it did not move, it got painted.

my late bro-in-law had his car repainted, they moved it outside to dry, and several maple leafs landed on the wet paint.

the guys at Earls, did nuffin else. bro-in-law drove car home with maple leafs stuck to it......

I worked a robbery/murder in the late 70's where two thugs that were prison releasee's ran a couple off the highway, took the man's wallet, then shot him. There was paint transfer. Thugs were driving a car of a color that I don't recall, but took it to Earl Scheib's to have it painted a different color. They eventually abandoned that car for another stolen car. When we caught up to them in a cheap hotel and arrested them on auto theft and burglary, stolen purse from a burglary had a receipt for the paint job inside, which eventually tied them to the murder car. The Earl Scheib receipt was a key piece of evidence. Palm prints on the victim's car matched one of the suspects and that sealed the deal. Turns out these two thugs had committed several burglaries and 3 murders in the few weeks since getting out of the pen. Both got the death sentence but it was never carried out. My only involvement with Earl Scheib.

Reminds me of a your momma joke. Your momma’s so fat Earl Scheib wouldn’t paint her for 29.95.
 
A guy I went to high school with had his car painted there. He did his own body work. When he got it back it looked good from 20-30 feet away. Up close some of the trim was painted. The glass wasn’t taped off too well and the tires had paint on them. All that didn’t matter. A week later after a drinking party, he totaled the car in the metro park. 🤷
 
My first car was a 1963 Mercury Comet that I bought wrecked. I got some junk yard body parts and fixed it up. Then Ol' Earl slapped on his $29.95 special. Midnight Blue. The car looked great!
But after a year or so, the paint started coming off in chunks. For that price you don't get much prep work. They just tape it off and shoot. It don't last long. :rolleyes:

My first car was a 1961 Merc comet . Had a 144CID engine with 2 speed automatic. It didn't have enough horsepower to pull a sick .... eerrr person off a thunder mug but it sure beat walking. :ROFLMAO:
 
69 and somewhat remember them, generally but not details. Never had any dealings although I remember in the late 60's there was a whole section of the newspaper for sale ads for cars for $100. At 13-14 I used to think about fiiiinally being 16 and maybe buying a $100 car to get driving. Probably figured on a $29.95 paint job for it too. Don't recall now.

I remember those ads. I remember a friend took his old beater over to Columbus Ohio. He got the paint job done. They hosed it off and painted it. Right over everything rust decals, everything. Didn't tape anything off either lol
