I heard about Academy but haven’t been to one. Personally I don’t mind trying stuff out and do a drive if it’s decent. The only problem I have is driving to the Chicagoland area for stuff because it’s just a joke to get around.

Academy is good for some outdoor basics. clothes are mid grade quality to some low quality. they do carry some name brands like Nike, Carhart, etc... Their Magellen brand is mediocre but serves a good need when kids are changing clothes size quick as you can buy outdoor stuff for a decent price knowing that it wont fit in another season or 2. I'll buy some cheap tee shirts there for getting dirty at camp, etc and dont care what happens.
mostly outdoor camping stuff is what academy is good for and coolers, chairs, etc for camping/hunting.
good for inexpensive if you need some basics at camp. ammo sales are good. firearms and gun supplies. meh.

I’ll avoid Dick’s all together. The one I went to was in Davenport IA. I know cabella’s is owned by bass pro shop but anything close to me is near Chicago (and I hate Chicago driving along with the taxes)

Well I guess next time I’m down at Sheel’s I’ll have to check out academy

Bass Pro (BP) is the "K-Mart" of Big Box sporting goods chain stores.

When I was stationed back east I went into a Bass Pro to check it out, was not impressed and never did any business with them.

Being a very loyal Cabela's customer "old" Cabela's was great until JM did a hostile take-over of Cabela's and ruined that chain.

I've heard all the horror stories from the ex-Cabela's folks I know that went thru the "change" in our local "mini" store. Cheap clothes vs. the great old Cabela's line and with a few rare exceptions, the place is fully of cheap ChiCom-made 💩y trinkets that are popular for some strange reason in other eastern parts of the country.

We're lucky we have a Scheels, Sportsman's Warehouse, a smaller regional store, and some LGS's to go into first. I only stick (& hold) my nose when I rarely go in our BP local store (they changed the sign to BP last year) when curious, can't find about something in the former, or desperate.

Not a good look !

Mostly stick & ball sports , and womens clothes , vaguely " sporty " .

Camping , fishing , hunting departments about 20% of what they used to be .

Two short rows of gun cleaning & accessories . Small smattering of ammo , but no firearms , only a few air guns .

I totally understand and I barely go into one at all. Truthfully I forgot I did forget about the one time I did go and laughed on the way out.

Personally Scheels is what a “sporting store” should be (in my book). I do agree Dick’s worthless for us shooters. Next trip to down south I will try academy sports.
