Ayoob: Is Open-Carry Irresponsible (or the Right Move)?

After a long career as a LEO both in uniform and plain clothes, I have formed opinions. First, if you think open carry is a deterrent to criminals, consider that violent criminals bent on mayhem will attack a uniformed, armed officer. Why would you think they would not attack a civilian open carrying?

One thing is for certain: If you are open carrying where it is not commonplace, you draw attention to yourself. Ask why do you want to do that? And why are you carrying a firearm in the first place?

People who allow their ego, or their emotions to gain control of their firearm are headed for a disaster. If you are open carrying to satisfy your ego, you are on the wrong track. Put your gun and your ego away and you will get a better result.

Florida is an open carry and a constitutional carry state, except for certain places enumerated in the law. I am fine with the law. I live on a ranch and open carry all the time out here because we have a wide variety of varmints that one might encounter. My neighbors expect to see me armed. But when I head into town, I throw on a cover garment so as not to spook the townfolk. If my pistol is ever to become visible to a n'er do well with evil intent, I want my 1911 to come as a terrible surprise.

To quote an old timer, "your pistol is like your penis. Keep it covered in public and it won't get you into trouble".

I remember being in Tennessee a few years ago. My wife and I took a little vacation, and we were going into one of a museum at one of their historic sites. Posted on the door was a sign stating that open carry was not permitted BUT concealed carry was ENCOURAGED. I think that is a respectful, thoughtful and intelligent way of dealing with the issue. I appreciated their effort to put the regular folk at ease while being considerate of those of us who do carry. I was carrying concealed, as I do everywhere it is permitted. Closest I come to open carry is an OWB holster with a cover garment. Here in Florida, during the warmer months I may choose to do that from time to time, especially when I am mowing the front entrance to our subdivision. If I print a little bit, oh well. I am not going to lose sleep over that.

Great article. Thanks for writing that Mr Ayoob.
Just 2 points I think are worth adding.

1. People (including “2A supporters”) who are ok with open carry being illegal are allowing us to go down that slippery road to more gun restrictions. Open carry is just as protected by the constitution as concealed carry and we need to respect the document regardless of our personal opinions. The document is sacred and ALL of it must be protected, even any parts we may not agree with. Also, there are a lot of other things not gun related that are and should be legal but are not smart to do. Are we gonna rely on the government to write laws for everything that might be dumb to do?

2. Where I live nobody open carries even though it’s legal. This is because, in addition to the honestly alarmed citizens calling 911 for a “man with a gun” there will also be the liberal with a very different political view on guns who wants to make an example out of you by calling 911.

Before that gets here.

I realize this is crappy picture but I am open carrying today because it's too damn hot to wear an over shirt

Hopefully no busybody noticed you
… what an amazing view

I sat down on a stump and Squeaky pecked the grip.

Seriously, my nearest neighbor is a half mile away. If some busybody (Other than my turkey) was actually close enough to notice they already know me well enough to know I carry a gun.

The population density out here is 2 people per square mile.

I absolutely LOVE open carry. It's legal in PA. It's rare, but you see it. And I live in a city. About once a month you see someone at a WalMart open carrying. Saw a guy a few months ago at Hobby Lobby. Las weekend saw a guy out yardsaleing. It was great.

We NEED to make it common to make people stop being afraid and making a big deal of it.

What is it about open carry that you love? Is it the political statement that it makes or is it normalizing the carry of firearms?

I think open carry is great for rural environments or on your property. For out and about among the general population I would inquire on what retention level the holster they carry is and when their last handgun retention training certification was completed. I'm one of those people who think friction retention holsters (i.e. no active retention feature) is bordering on negligence.

"handgun retention training certification"

Sounds a lot like backdoor registration to me.
