Range report, More 1911 Love.

hworth18

Master Class
I spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the range this past week putting my new TRP and new to me Dan Wesson Vigil thru their paces. Both functioned as expected, shooting a variety of 9mm ammo in 115gr, & 124gr, Magtech, S&B and Fiocchi. About 600 rounds total.
Shooting the Vigil really was nice, it's a very smooth shooting 1911 and I shot it very well even though it only has iron sights. It will be added to my carry rotation once I have enough rounds thru it to be confident that it is 100% reliable. The TRP ran smooth as silk, the only issue I had was that the Hydra grips are just too aggressive for my baby soft hands and they almost left a blister. I think I'll be changing the grips on that TRP soon. Because of that, I only ran maybe 3 mags thru the TRP this whole weekend. It's funny that the grips on my other TRP are fine and they are the same texture, but cut slightly different.
Target distances are mostly 10 yards, a couple at 8 yards. I didn't mark which was which.

Good shootin! Wear gloves.

Wait, what?!? You can shoot 600 rounds without gloves and not slice up your finger, but your palm gets blistered? If your TRP has a serrated trigger like mine, I’m done after about 200 rounds (if not wearing shoooting gloves)!

Good on you for shooting so much you have developed an indestructible callous on your tigger finger!! I need to do that…time to order more ammo…

Most of those rounds were thru my Vigil.. I usually run 1000 rounds thru a gun before I consider it reliable.
I would've liked to have shot more thru the TRP but it didn't happen. Maybe next time.
And yeah, I definitely need more ammo.

Hey @hworth18!

You got a few raggedy holes there, your hits touching. That's the kind of stuff I like to see, and I try to shoot for. Nice work. I'm glad your new pistols are working out for you. I think I know what you mean about "aggressive" grips on a 1911. My Garrison has some really spiky VZ grips that chomp into my hand like a big dog. I've been looking at other G10 type grips that don't poke holes in my palms. ;) I also need to look into a pair of dedicated shooting gloves. The gloves I have are not really designed for it. Anyway, thanks for sharing your fun.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I have farm and ranch hands and sweat a lot so I like aggressive grips.

Seriously if you need gloves try 5.11 shooting gloves. I have a pair that I worn several years for skeet and sporting clays and they are excellent for the purpose.
Second for 5.11 shooting gloves. Always in my bag, but don’t always use. Usually when I feel my fingertip start to cut…or when I’m stupid enough to shoot .357 out of my Kimber K6s!

Thanks Cliff!! I really like these smaller 8.5x11 targets, they really do make a difference in accuracy verses the larger torso targets. I shoot the bigger targets every now and then, but I usually use those for sighting in optics or rapid fire drills. My range won't let me draw, but I can pick up from the bench. I do quite a few just grab and shoot drills without sights or optics, also singlehanded, weak handed and long distance shots.

I like printing a lot of my own targets on 8.5x11 as well. You've seen me use my "aim small, miss small" targets. I usually have tighter groups with those rather than trying to stay in the center of a larger silhouette. Thanks for reminding me that I have not done much single hand or off hand practice lately. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,
