    When it was best to quietly ease the bolt forward instead letting it slam home, the forward assist was handy to make sure the round was firmly seated. Not sure if it was really necessary or not.

    My Dad, back in '56. Pheasant hunting with my little .410, then target shooting with one of his .22's. A 12ga. for my 12th birthday. A second introduction to more serious calibers at Ft. Bliss, then Tiger Land in the late '60's.
