Seriously though I’d bet every critter on this continent has been taken multiple times with the ‘06. Newer doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Another 30-06 vote. And remember what my father taught me...the real hunter brags about how close his shot was, not how far. Shooting beyond 300 yards is difficult and takes a LOT of range time. Guys at the gun shop are always bragging about shooting a deer at 500 yards and beyond. I actually HOPE they are lying, because if they are shooting that far most of them are leaving cripples.

I have 12,000 30-06 cases, a few were 270 cases that have been turned back into 30 caliber.
There is nothing I can not kill with one of three 30-06s here.
As far as 30-30/30WCF goes. There is a guy out here who has a buffalo ranch. They shoot one every other year.
The Winchester they use was bought by their great grandfather in 1902.
They shoot them in the corral, and at 10 feet away. He told me in never takes more than one shot to put one down.

You won’t find “Magnumitis” in the dictionary. The term was coined as a derisive nickname for the tendency of shooters to go for broke in the pursuit of power.
The author implies the term was meant to imply that the shooter who has succumbed to Magnumitis places power above accuracy. The originator made the argument that we could do just as well in the hunting field with standard calibers as we do with Magnums.

I have shot a lot of rifles over the many years that I have hunted and I can't make a suggestion for you. You need to try different rifles and find one that fits not what I would suggest. My first deer that I tagged on my first season of was legally shot with a Winchester 22 at 40 yards. I have had 308 Norma Magnum,a303 British short barrel jungle military,a 30-06, 7mm magnum,30-30,even a 600 Nitro,6.5 Swedish Mauser and a couple more. I like the 45-70 and served up some great steaks but about the last 8 or9 years hunting I found the rifle that liked me which helped save a water melon patch,dear,elk bear, javelina and Antelope took all those down. My 25-06 did the job, Seiko finbar was beautiful and a pleasure to shoot. I don't hunt anymore because I am crippled up pretty much so I can only wish for those days. Accuracy is the key so find what is comfortable for you to shoot then practice and when you hunt don't waste or chase meat, put it down and give thanks for feeding your family. Seems most of you would choose 30-06...is it mainly the versatility in being able to take down most game? What's your preferred round for deer? Is it much different for elk?

I live in Texas. Deer are small body weight and mass. A .270 or similar is plenty of round. My daughter uses a .243win and has dropped 3 bucks DOA.
Unlike northern / western states with big mass deer, elk or moose, i dont need a round that can do both unless I plan to hunt those states.
I have a .300 Wby Mag from being up north.
Texas, a lot of rounds get the job done.
I shoot a .243 or .308. Used to shoot a .270 but passed that on to my son with my 30.06. Bought the grandson a 7mm-.08. He has harvested 5 deer since he received the rifle 4/2023. Personally this year I am going to use one of my lever action 30-30 to try an harvest one.

Frankly I've never owned any rifles that start with the number 2 until the last decade. And really not even then since they're technically 5.56. I did have a couple 10/22s years ago , but I never got into .22s until I inherited some cool old models from my uncle. When I was 10 and started deer hunting with my dad he bought me a 30-30 and when I was about 12 or 13 I got a Remington 700 in 30-06 and used it until I got my BAR in 30-06. The last decade of my firearm hunting career I used an unscoped .44 Magnum revolver.
I had cousins and uncles down south that hunted with 22-250s and .25-06s and .243s. But they're different down there. They hunt year round because that's what they live on.

Killed my first deer in the early 80s with a 22-250 and a 64gr Winchester PowerPoint on top of a full case of H380. Deer dropped like a bag of hammers.
Our peanut farmers have damage control permits issued by the state and shoot hundreds of deer year round. I can tell you that the 222/223 and 22-250 are very popular choices.
It’s all about shot placement and bullet construction. Is a third caliber entrance would more lethal than a 22 caliber entrance wound? Maybe. Maybe not. Dead is dead.

I always preferred my 1968 Remington 280 for deer. I hunted on private land and longest shots were 100-150 yards. Never hunted elk. That rifle never let me down with Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain ammo at 3000 fps. 30-06 would likely be a better choice for elk, moose, or bear. Just my opinion.
