45 auto with 16 inch barrel

You might have to be a handloader to find out. Today's 45 ACP rounds are running powders that are designed for shorter handgun barrels. Sometimes longer barrels actually have lower velocity due to the powder being completely burned but the bullet is still in the barrel and velocity suffers due to frictional losses.
Kinda what i was thinkin too, but needed someone elses opinion. and then i heard maybe more speed cause the charge is behind the bullet longer.

There is a place for 45 acp rifles. The Marlin camp carbine was one underrated example. S&W and Ruger have a couple offering.

I would say won’t gain velocities like other magnum pistol rounds out of a rifle (like 357 or 44 mag) but you likey won’t loose a noticeable amount of velocity until hih get a 19-20 or ak barrel. Which is why most of the guns ever made in that caliber were 18” or less.

And if Ruger is listening Bring back the Marlin 45 camp carbine with 1911 mags.

Unless the ammo states "short barrel" you should be gtg. +p is the way to go as long as it's safe in that firearm. I've run wwb ammo in the vector w/o issues. Defense ammo might not be a good choice. Pressure isn't the issue on longer barrels, it's gas volume. I can only test commercial powders as factory powders are different in most cases. Actually the bullets don't slow down, the don't maintain the save added fps per inch (25fps being average, but more like 10fps after 10"). I haven't confirmed yet as I haven't chronographed any.

I’m of the believe that most auto pistol cartridges will peak out way before 16”, just like rifle cartridges under about 14” result in a lot of flash and noise but don’t get their max velocity because unburned powder gets ejected and burns in the air, not in the tube. Once the pistol powder has burned in the tube, extra barrel is just going to add drag to the bullet, actually costing velocity. I like a .357 and .44 in a short rifle. A .45 carbine would nice IF you can optimize barrel length ( though I dunno what that might be- I’d guess “optimal” would be a length that would require an SBR 😏

How long was the barrel on a Tommy Gun? Barrel length can add to or subtract bullet velocity.
I'll have to measure
