9mm Range ammo for high volume practice Comped / Ported handgun?

SL66

Professional
Greetings TAL friends, as a somewhat high volume shooter (i think) of 9mm through comped / ported 2011 style hand guns, what ammo do you prefer for range PRACTICE and why?
When searching for ammo for these guns, my main criteria would be price of course, paired with ease of cleaning said port / comp.
While I regularly shoot my 1911's in 45acp and various edc 9mm strikers, this question is based on the following two beauties.
Since December 2024,
Staccato XC approximately 10275 rounds
Springfield Prodigy DS 5" Comp approximately 5800 rounds

I have run most major brands and some lessor brands of fmj ammo and landed at Blazer Brass.
90% of above count has been Blazer Brass in both 115fmj and 124fmj. Both accurate enough for range PRACTICE.

I have found that if I coat the inside of the comp with Slip 2000 EWL30 before range session, all it takes to clean comp is a few minutes (5 minutes) at most with a brass scraper i crafted from a 1/4" brass rod from hardware store.

I am one of those anal guys who want my gun to look as good or better after a range session than it looked before i removed it from the safe.

If you just have to run a comp (aka velocity reducer) for the mighty recoil of a 9mm uiu will get more benefit with the high speed 1,200-1,300 124 grains like the major power factor loaded that some USPSA open shooters run.

If it’s a 115 at 1,150 or do probably not worth the trouble but YMMV

Thank you for your input? Obviously your way or the highway. Rock on killer!

Hi,

According to CCI's website, their Blazer Brass 9mm is not recommended for comped or ported barrels...

I use a lot of S&B, some Winchester NATO, and recently Remington and PPU, whatever I can get for the best price. I use BB in my non-comped pistols.

I'm not a high volume shooter, maybe 500 rounds/month of 9mm and about the same of .45acp.

Thank you for your indulgence,

The port / comp is well in front of the rifled portion of the barrel and the opening at muzzles end is plenty large. Non-issue for a range / compitition gun. Thank you for your response @BassCliff.

Have you ever looked at Atlanta Arms before?
I’ve used their 9mm and it’s been very consistent and clean.

Another option to consider is Bone Frog. I can attest to their reliability and quality offerings. Easy to deal with too.

Not for range/practice, but…

I took “Baba Yaga”—my P30L w/attached comp out and ran some Federal 115gr+P+(1300fps), some Winchester 127+P+(1250fps), and some Underwood 124+P (1225fps)out of it, compared to 115gr blasters and 147 JHP’s.

There’s definitely something to hotter ammo making the comp work its magic; running that 115+P+ it stayed incredibly flat, compared to a VP9 Match (close enough of a platform for comparison to me) running it.

So, for practice?

I’d say that 124 NATO is going to give you the best results.

Hi,

Thanks Cliff… didnt know this on Blazer 124 and comp barrels 😵‍💫😬

I was unaware until someone here pointed it out. Seems the bullet can lose bits of its plating when leaving the barrel and cause damage to any soft tissue in the vicinity. I'd have to search for the thread. That warning is for 115, 147, and other weights too.

Thank you for your indulgence,
