Almost had to draw my gun "4 legged variety"

Well how many times you question the need to carry or say I'll never need this thing ?? Well we were camping this past weekend and some ingneramous let their pit bull off it's leash and went after my wife who was talking with some friends I started to lift my shirt as I was running and yelling at the dog but the owner got there about three seconds before I did.
Luckily it wasn't able to bite her only because she squared up to him and he hesitated. I really thought I would have to shoot that thing I couldn't imagine her alone getting mauled I yelled at the lady and told her to keep that thing on it's leash never the less I kept a sharp on on that camp site until they left.

i really do not like, nor trust pits.......i do not care what anyone says that THIER PIT is friendly....

friendly my ***.......

i'd have shot the dog myself, if ANYONE in my family was in ANY sort of danger from a pit.

then let the courts decide on MY fate.

sorry, but i feel strongly on that particular breed.

Im a dog lover, who understands that I have a responsibility to control my dog.

I had a friend who was walking his puppy on a nearby trail when a pack of dogs picked him out for "lunch". He was able to scare them off; but they came back and he did have to shoot one. He called the State Patrol who located the owner. Apparently the owner opens the doors and lets them run. The owner acknowledged that he was wrong. No one was charged but the PD gave the owner a warning

I have friends that have Pits but they scare me, and Im the guy whos had Rotties and Sheppard's

You were lucky! I have had to shoot a dog. Honestly, I have shot 2 dogs in my neighborhood in the 32 years I have lived here. Both were pitbulls and owners said they were not vicious. The first time my husky was attacked and 4 months later I had to put her down. Second time was when Maggie was just a puppy and I had to shoot it in the middle of the street. Both times law enforcement was called and I was cleared for the shootings. Neighbors now know I won't mess around. If they let them run loose and they approach me it could go bad for the dog.

I've always been nervous around dogs when I was around 8 years old my neighbor who was a marine dog handler his Sheppard dog jumped the fence while I was riding my bike down the sidewalk and bit my leg.
The police wanted me to press charges but I said no not my neighbor we didn't do that to our neighbors they were like family he was very apologetic and sorry it happened.

Yeah I was bitten by a servicemembers dog a few years ago. He said it wasn't his dog. I said it came out of your garage in your house. The guy was a jerk. I now don't care what neighbors think as a matter of fact seems like service members around here seem to be the issue. They think they are above the law. Being a retired service member I have no respect for these people now. I'm not the only retired military that feels this way around here either.

I used to have a Rottweiler named Otis. He was well mannered and very well socialized with my kids and all the neighborhood kids. When my son was a toddler, he was nearly mauled by our backyard neighbor's Alaskan Malamute. This dog was able to jump a 6-foot-high picket fence and was always coming into my backyard. He was always friendly with Otis and my son. But one day, out of the blue, he changed. He was inches away from grabbing my toddler son. The ex-wife was too far away to do anything. I was out of town on a job. Otis immediately threw himself in front of my son to protect him long enough for my ex-wife to grab him and get back in the house. A vicious dog fight went on for quite a while. My ex-wife was able to get Otis back in the house when the dogs briefly broke up from their fight. Otis was a little bloody, but ok. The city impounded the Alaskan Malamute because the owners were not home and could not be contacted. Eventually the owners were contacted, and they had the dog destroyed. I felt bad about that. But Otis was a hero, the best dog I ever had. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Rottweilers. My whole point about this is owners are responsible for their dogs, and how they are socialized. But if I am ever forced to, I will shoot an attacking dog.

Many years ago, I was living at at Langley AFB with my father and we had a sweet playful doberman.
The dog was not neutered as my father had in the back of his mind, maybe he could use his big strong husky adorable lovable dog for stud service?

Eventually the dog started to growl and show his teeth to my mum and dad. My mun was the one feeding him daily.

One day I was home alone and when he did it to me and I thought he was going to attack me, I was extremely scared and my reaction was to jump on him and beat him with both my fist over and over and over for what seamed like minutes until his calmed down.
Afterwards, i was standing up over the dog, waiting for him to re-attack me, with my whole body trembling, I was reliving the event and I remember, everything went slow-motion as I was only focused on surviving and I assume it was "Fight of Flight" time and my adrenaline was still flowing.
Later, after I too calmed down and took a shower, did I realize how many marks were not only on my hands but marks on my body.

Going forward he never ever showed me his teeth and threatened me however he still did his aggressiveness to my father and mum and we had to get rid of him and his breed papers.

A pitbull did this to me

I made it very clear to the owner I will kill it on sight if I ever see it running loose again.

That one incident changed my perspective on dogs forever. I won't say I'll never trust another dog again but I'll sure as hell[/l] never get down on face level with another dog again.

I've told the story before I'm not going to go through the whole thing just the main point is I was bending over petting another dog he jumped over the other dog and latched on to my face. I did not intentionally get down on face level with that dog.

What happened to the dog and its owners after the attack? I'm just wondering why the dog wasn't put down after attacking you.

The dog's owner is my granddaughter. That complicates things. If it wasn't my granddaughter I would walk up to the fence and kill the dog the next time the owners let it out.

I have no idea what was or was not reported. We don't live in a town, we don't have a police force, I have never seen the Humane Society come out here. I know it was reported to the VA and I assume they reported it to the authorities and the authorities chose to do nothing.

It lives behind and 8-ft fence and the owner is well aware that the very first time I see it running loose on the property I'm going to kill it.

I assume she believes me because she keeps that dog in its enclosure all the time.

Yes, that makes things complicated. I'm sorry that you were attacked.

I don't care what anybody says, pitbulls were BRED for one thing and one thing only: to kill. They were specifically bred to fight in pits to the death. Period. Full stop. They were never meant to be "sweet, lovable, gentle" dogs. I don't care what your pit is like, eventually their genetic instincts take over and they do what they were bred to do. It is inevitable. And anybody who has one and has kids is a moron. There are a handful of breeds that cannot be trusted with children, and pits are on the top of that list. They were not bred to be protectors, herders, or working dogs. They were bred to kill. They were brought into existence through the ignorance of Man, and should be given a humane end to the breed. They need to be sterilized and allowed to peacefully fade away. While it is not their fault for what they are, they are not compatible with society. That is just my opinion.

I never knew (or remember) the outcome.

I have Old Timers disease too.

I want to be really careful how I say this because it's going to sound like I'm saying that my daughter is being malicious and she's not she's being pragmatic.

I also don't know the behind the scenes stuff.

My daughter is the one that bought the property that we live on. Her daughter also lives on the same property.

We pay a token rent and I'm sure my granddaughter pays rent but I don't know how much. I know that my daughter covers at least part of the mortgage.

What I'm about to say is pure speculation.

The original plan was for the dog to go to a pitbull sanctuary. I think that the granddaughter told her mom that if the dog goes she (and her rent money) are also going..

If that happens daughter loses the property in my wife and I lose our home.

So daughter came out put the best solution she could she put up an 8 ft fence behind granddaughter's house and told her never ever to let that dog run loose again.

Oddly enough, nobody told granddaughter that I have every intention of shooting that dog if I ever see it outside that fence.

I know this because she heard me say it to somebody once and threw a fit.

She started raising hell because I threatened to kill her dog and either my wife or her mom told her that I said that tonight it happened. I made it crystal clear in the hospital that I was going to kill that dog.

If nobody told her that wasn't on me.
