Another firearm tragedy

It only takes a momentary lapse
Florida toddler dies in car

A 3-year-old boy died on October 22, 2026, after finding a handgun in his father's car and accidentally shooting himself at a Burger King drive-thru in Bartow, Florida.

What Happened

• Incident: The father was in the drive-thru at a Burger King on East Van Fleet Drive around 6:30 p.m. when he had trouble with his credit card payment.
• The Gun: The father removed a Glock pistol from his waistband because it was uncomfortable while he leaned over, and placed it inside the vehicle.
• The Shooting: The 3-year-old boy in the back seat picked up the unholstered gun and accidentally fired it, striking himself.
• Aftermath: First responders performed life-saving measures and rushed the child to Lakeland Regional Health, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation and Charges

• Current Status: No arrests have been made, and the Polk County Sheriff's Office did not immediately recommend criminal charges while the case is reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office.
• Context: Investigators noted the family had recently moved to the area from Connecticut and was fully cooperating.

This was someone's response on a local news site:

This is why i dont carry with one in the chamber. Everyone always says "what if you dont have time to rack the slide..."? In my opinion it's FAR more likely that an accident will happen then I would need it for defense. As such I dont keep it "loaded" just a full mag. To all the boys (not men) that think its cool or necessary to have a cocked and locked gun should take note. For me a gun is all about RISK MANAGEMENT. I carry because there is a small risk I may need to defend myself, I don't carry with one in the chamber because I KNOW its more likely a tragedy will occur then the need for self defense. If you are already carrying you're prepared enough, stop carrying with one in the chamber.

Also from the same idiot:

Or, I dont know, don't have it "hot". No reason to have one chambered, ESPECIALLY with a kid within reach. You are more likely to have an accident then need it for self defense. That's just statistics and COMMON SENSE. I carry, but not with one chambered for reasons precisely like this. I like to think im very safe BUT ACCIDENTS STILL HAPPEN, to think you're the exception is hubris and gets innocent people killed. Also, that split second I need to rack, gives me another moment to think, rather then just react.

I don’t get why anyone leaves a firearm in theor car let alone where a curious toddler can get to it.

Owning and carrying a firearm is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE that unfortunately most casual gun owners fail to understand and the we read tragic and yet preventable stories like this!
1. He took it out of his waistband because it was "uncomfortable" and set it down within reach of the child.
2. The child obviously was not properly restrained in a car seat/booster seat to keep him from wandering around in the car. This is not addressed in any article that I have read.
3. He either took the gun from his waistband which he didn't have it a proper holster or took it out of the holster and left the holster in his waistband. Both are stupid and irresponsible decisions.

This is one of those cases where I firmly believe he should be charged and prosecuted for negligence and negligent homicide.

i saw an interesting facebook video, from a gal gun owner..

she put a loaded mag in her gun, then said, "if you don't have 1 in the chamber, then all you have is a paperweight."

i dunno, i keep 1 in the chamber, and it is holstered at ALL times, with (to me) a very comfortable holster.

the guy was a fool, and now his kid is dead.

Yeah but nobody needs to read it to know Dad was a smith brainer. And again it’s just proof owning especially carrying (but both) is in fact a lifestyle change. And when you have smooth brainer though processes peolme are injured or killed!

I always keep mine in the holster. I think one time I used my holster as a case at the range in Alabama because I wanted to rotate my carry ammo and clean it. I don’t have kids but my mother is learning quickly about gun safety.

Personally I wish people took gun safety seriously. I know I sound like a retarded liberal but i swear people need to be more respectful of what is around them when it comes to guns especially if they have kids. Teach kids the basic 4 growing up and don’t leave it out for them at all.
