I’m a DIY kind of guy. Except for full on electrical.

i like to fix my cars where I can. Satisfaction of being able to handle most auto repair except for the full blown overhaul.
radiators, water pumps, power steering, brakes, etc…

spent around $30 on a latch part that dealer and auto shop wanted $350 - $400+ to repair .
Any other auto DIY’s on here ?

Always have been. Mostly because I couldn't afford to pay someone else to do it.

These days I pick and choose my battles. At least with cars.
Same here. I’ll do most of the work that needs to be done on mine and my family’s cars. Except for major stuff like transmissions or engine rebuilds. PITA, but much cheaper than paying someone else.

I also do home repairs, some plumbing & electrical, rebuilding decks and additions and all that.

Just can’t see paying someone else to do something that I can do or figure out how to do.

My dad was a mechanic, so I grew up helping him on weekends working on cars, he was a Ford and Chrysler mechanic, today, I don’t work on these new cars, but anything from the mid 90’s yea, I’ll tackle them. Also a few years back my brother and I was working on his drag car till it got way to expensive to do it anymore.

I was a journeyman carpenter and a contractor most of my life. I completely rebuilt my house after a flood in 2017 so I can totally relate.

I used to do engines and trannys. And I would do it again for a project car. Not a daily driver though.

The stuff I punt is the PITA stuff for sure. Exhaust. Anything that results in needing a front end alignment. Etc..

I drive two old fords always been a Ford kind of guy I do most all the simple body work stuff my old Bronco is a 1990 thirty or so years old I replaced every interior panel seats. I cut my teeth on an 08 Miata. Modded it from top to bottom. Went up Pikes Peak with it, took it to the Dragon on the east coast, tracked it. By the time I was done there was nothing stock in it. I try and export what I learned to my Porsche and my Mini. Have to careful with the Porsche though because screwing something up the first time and putting it right the second time gets pretty pricey. Even an oil change can bite you in the butt because the drain plug is a recessed star pattern that strips in seconds. It’s less aggro to lay out $250 and let the Porsche specialist do it. I’m sure there’s another Miata in my future.

Nice!!!

From the bottom up I don't mind, but working under the hood kills me! I don't mind building an engine, trans or brake work. If anyone needs tech help for a 534 ford, I'm the 1 too talk to! Ford was terrible for industrial motors. They would put the firing order on the intake and it would be WRONG! Not sure about the rest of the motors though? I don't do any full electronic type only the older electronic.

I started helping my Brother - in - law with his dirt track roundy rounder when I was 13. Then after a few years he got into sprint cars before they were running wings. I have built my own motors , rear ends , manual transmissions. I wouldn't touch an automatic.

The last hot rod I had was a 1978 F - 250 4x4. I built a 428 cobra jet and installed it. Had to make custom motor mounts to fit that engine to that late model frame. ( I could have sat a 460 down in that bay with no effort )

I can no longer do any wrenching on my own cars and trucks but I still have plenty of tools. I am lucky to have a mechanic who I have known since he was 6 years old and I know he won't rip me off.

The last manual I did was a Muncie back in '86 when in auto mech school. I had a '65 stingray (go figure, born in '65) that was my project car. The only 2 classes I didn't work on it was a/c and automatics. Somebody swaped out the 327mfi for a 350. After 2 years of work I went airborn upside down and found the true meaning of "rag top" being a convertible.
