AR platforms for hunting

It's kind of conflicting for me , in that l Like blue steel and walnut . But also would like to make politician heads explode by hunting with EBR . But they are quite popular and effective in my area .

In the origonal .223/ 5.56 , bonded or monolithic 60 - 65 gr projectiles are certainly leathal on Bambi with good placement .

But with an Upper swap , there's a large plethora of Hunting Specific and Hunting overlapping ctgs .

The .350 Legend zoomed quickly to the top , displacing the supersonic .300 B.O. .400 Legend has my interest peaked .

Moving farther down the Big Bore vs Trajectory rabbit hole , the .450 , .458 , and .50 Beo .

Hunting overlap ctgs include 6.5Grendel , 6.8SPC , and 7.62 x 39 .

There you go.

I'm happy with my one-MOA AR15, but for deer hunting I'll use one of my bolt guns in a larger bore. I like the feel of the bolt gun insofar as handling in the field.

And an AR10 is no lightweight.
You can get a large-chassis pretty light…but it COSTS. Carbon fiber barrel, lightweight upper & lower (don’t think they make magnesium receivers for large chassis…I’ve got one for a small chassis I got as a lark( still in the package. Super lightweight). May still build a dedicated .22 out of it if I get motivated…

Wilson makes one in .308 that comes in at 7.5#, dry (no mag or optics)…and that’s running an all-steel barrel.

Springfield Saint .308 comes in at 7.8lbs unloaded.
Which is lighter than most .308s

I went down a rabbit hole…

F4 makes one that comes in under 6#.

I’ll take 7.8lbs for $2500 less Alex

Yes, it can be used as a hunting rifle.
I prefer bolt action guns hunting here.

When I lived in PA my deer hunting rifle was a Mosin Nagant M38 I bought for $49.
It had been bubba'd badly when bought.

True .

At one point Shooting & Hunting Partner #2 had an FAL that was so accurate , that if l said the group sizes , nobody would believe me .

But since he is a Sequential Gun Accumulator , in a couple of years he got bored with it , and traded towards something else .

I have an Austrian Styer made FAL Barrel on my Para build that will hit half inch groups all day long, which is extremely rare for an FAL

AR’s have become more popular for hunting in recent times.
Not just weapons of war 😉😊

I enjoy using my FAL and Saint .308 for taking game or hogs as well

The AR-platform's versatility explains its growing popularity among hunters - that 41% adoption rate reflects its customization for different game and terrains. While debates continue about its civilian use, the data shows these rifles are increasingly seen as tools, not just tactical weapons. For many hunters, modularity and accuracy outweigh outdated stereotypes.
