Ayoob: Cross-Dominant Handgun Shooting

You couldn't have told me this in 1990 at the FBI Academy? I thought I knew EVERYTHING you'd ever said or taught back then but as a Left Eye Dominant right hander who just learned to shoot left handed... I could've saved lots of time, grief and money!!! (Seriously Mas, thanks for then... and now!)

When I figured out I was left eye dominant the only cure I could find for it was to shoot left handed. I came up with my own plan. First teach yourself to shoot with both eyes open. Then tilt your head slightly so the sight(s) line up with the left eye. Then my instructor refined it further. Train yourself to bring the gun up to the left eye on draw. Easy Peasy.

This article was just in time. I recently had eye surgery on my dominant eye (right). I shoot with my dominant hand (again right). The surgeon said he couldn’t guarantee what my vision might be after recovery. The vision is getting better and I can hope for the best. Thanks for the article Massad.

Place the pistol in the center like he said in an isosceles triangle. Good stance, use which ever eye suits you, then utilize the basics of pistol marksmanship and go from there. Vision issues from age or surgery is something else. I recommend optics at that point minus an astigmatism. Then there are red dots that work better for that.

Nah. Square up to the target like you’re supposed to. I can’t see a reason to tilt a gun, even off handed, unless you have lots kited mobility in your elbow or something.

People WAY overthink this.

Definitely an interesting read. I've been shooting handguns right hand/left-eyed, but I shoot my rifle and shotgun right hand /right-eyed. I'm a weirdo. :)

Retired Air Force officer here, right-handed, left-eye dominant. I was on the AF pistol team and won many trophies long before I discovered I was using the wrong eye.

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Ayoob: Cross-Dominant Handgun Shooting” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/cross-eye-dominant-handgun-shooting-massad-ayoob-training/.

Curious how many left handed / right eye dominant folks you talked with? I naturally shot long guns right handed as a kid and tried to shoot pistols with my dominate left hand, crossing over to use the right eye. It did not work for me. But since I live in a right handed world and have adapted to many tastes that are easier right handed, switching to shooting pistol right handed took almost no effort. It is so ingrained that when I dream of shooting pistols, it is right handed.

Hopefully I can adapt information from this to my particular problem. My weak hand is arthritic enough to make firing my preferred round painful enough to interfere with my aim, and my dominant eye is developing a cataract. While it is not yet bad enough to justify surgery, my vision out of my dominant eye is just the least bit blurry. Need to see if these recommendations help.
