Ayoob: Why I Don’t Want a Custom 1911

And no radio in my Cobra!

I’ll pass on 2/3 of that list. SA is ok, Glock is just the same thing across the board including the grip angle, and SIG needs to get rid of its CEO due to the current situation. At least S&W does a better Glock than Glock does.
You keep talking up M&P’s, nothing wrong with any Sig 320, btw, S&W can’t do anything better then other manufacturers, unless your referring to there poor quality control with there newer productions and CS, but I’ll take any Glock pistol over them, they work for me, always goes bang, reliable, if you want a pretty gun, get a 1911…….😬

Not exactly my music of choice, but probably something loud. Kashmir? Voodoo Child? For Whom the Bell Tolls? In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?

Much prefer the purr of the V-8 to heavy bass!

Or if you referring to the Geo Metro, not sure the chassis bolts would withstand heavy bass for more than a mile or two…
I can live with Jimy anytime!!! But Led Zeppelin I've never gotten used to the shrieking vocals. too bad because the drum bass and guitar are awesome. I might use an AI program to remove vocals

Carry guns are a personal choice. Most LEO's will never fire their handgun in combat. The chances that we as civilians will ever fire it in anger are infinitesimally small. But if you do need to use it in combat, you need it very badly, and it needs to work with speed, power, and accuracy. If you can do that best with a custom premium pistol, or a stock Plain Jane, then it makes sense to use one that works best for you. I carry a particular $2k pistol because I am confident it will provide me speed, power, and accuracy when I need it most. The thought that it might end up in an evidence room doesn't enter my thinking. If I am justified and not charged or am exonerated Florida law says LE has to give it back to me. If I am charged with an unjustified shooting, well, I have much bigger problems.

Yes sir
Agree 100%

Actually have a few 1911’s. Thanks for asking. I at least know they won’t have an accidental discharge.

I have a variety of 1911 pieces, including two tires, surplus units. One is actually very accurate.
I find Ayoob to be extremely knowledgeable, and have two acquaintances who have taken his courses. I don't agree with everything he advises but, the reason the 1911 is vastly more popular today, is between modern manufacturing and accessories/ammo, it remains formidable for plinking/competition/actual battle.
My current "favorite" shooter is a $260 RIA GI. Functions flawlessly, spot on accurate, and is all I need for staying in practice. I would have no problem carrying for SD. However, if my scandium S&W or my Wilson Combat ended up in an evidence locker or run over during a fracas; if it saved my life, I don't really care. Ultimately, the firearm is a TOOL. Use it, learn it, wear it out, get another. Not like the $100,000+ Hemi car that sits in the garage to prevent putting miles on it. Larry Sheppard would be appalled at the garage queen industry today, as so would John Browning.

If I’m involved in a shooting and my gun gets held for evidence until things get sorted out, that gun sitting there will be the least of my worries. It will probably be the least of my expenses, too.
I’ve heard this discussed a lot, but I never understood the concern.

I have a few, very few, custom guns and I carry them. The custom work was done to make them a little easier to manipulate, shoot, or control. All of the work combined might not help me use the gun better in any measurable way, but I will take it if I can get it. If it only makes me THINK I will shoot better when I’m defending a family member, it’s worth it.

+ 1
with a super loud stereo blasting some bass heavy music produced by Sly & Robbie or Dr Dre
Never thought I’d ever see someone referencing sly&robbie in a firearm forum 😂
Pleasantly shocked actually

98% of the time my edc is a Ronin commander. I would like to at some point, knock off the heal of the grip and change the msh for less printing… or perhaps get a 1911 already in that style. The budget is my stumbling block.

My longest carried 1911 was a LW Commander from the late 60's that was stock except for some King sights and Pachmeyr grips. An armorer polished the ramp and it fed duty ammo fine. Carried that until the frame cracked around the slide release pin. Every other 1911 I have is customized. Two Champions, a Colt CPO, a Professional and a Colt Gunsite. There is a big difference between 'wants' and 'needs.'

Personal experience:
Was thrilled to buy my first 1911 - a Springfield Ronin 4.25"

Was less than thrilled to sell it about a year later after only 250 rounds or so. More often than not, I'd have at least one failure to fire per mag, using stock Springfield mags. The Ronin was also light - too light IMHO to convey .45 ACP without being jumpy.

Was thrilled to take the funds from the Ronin's sale and pick up an Echelon 4.0c Comp. With the Holosun optic, this pistol is great.

Maybe it's just what we're used to? My first pistol was a Ruger 9E and for $309, it was (and still is) a solid pistol.

I want to love 1911s. I really do. But I think I will need a full-size government model (without the aluminum frame) and something better than the mil-spec sights. Being a wearer of progressive bifocals, those tiny little sights don't work that great for me.

All that said, I'm not sure most 1911s would outdo this new Echelon (for me). As always, YMMV.

Being honest here, 1911s were left in the dust as carry guns decades ago, Ayoob is just a fudd living in the bigger is better days. Ayoob and Jeff Cooper refused to acknowledge technological advances and are dinosaurs. 9mm is superior to fuddy-fi ACP, and with proper hollow points, can get more expansion than a 45 ACP. Oftentimes 45 ACP is moving too slow to properly expand and many pistols will jam unless using FMJs.
